    [IMG] In response to Flix and DR's wishes, a thread for German babbling.

    Ich esse gerne Sauerkraut, mein Herr.
    Ich hätte gerne ein Bier!

    Spam away. Or post something sensible and meaningful. All the better.

    Schreibt einfach los. Oder schreibt etwas kluges und sinnvolles, das wäre noch besser.

    Wow. Not sure I deserve the honor of an entire thread...my German is terrible (and I was mostly kidding). When I was in germany last summer I could speak enough not to get kicked in the face by little old ladies...but that's about it.

    Meine Deutsch ist der sheise. :p But I'll give it a shot.

    EDIT - The alley? Mein Gottenhemmel. This'll get moved, quickly.

    Even though I live in Luxembourg and visit Trier every month or so, I only know enough German to say: "Die Turkische, jeden tag so schnell!", "Mein Gott!", "Oh mann..." and "Danke schön", they prefer speaking en Francais and not auf Deutch here.

    All I can remember from GCSE German is "Ich habe alle meine Luftkissenfahrtzeugen gebrennt" (I have set all my hovercrafts on fire), which probably isn't even good German. Managed to squeeze that into my spoken exam, too.

    " Das Parken am Straßenrand ist verboten!"
    " Das Rauchen in diesem Abteil ist verboten!"
    " Das Verzehren von mitgeführten Speisen ist verboten!"
    " Das Streiken der Logführer ist hiermit gerichtlich verboten!"
    Verboten (= not allowed) is the G-men's favourite word.

    Good Barmy, fortunately SP allows you to use HTML entities, such as *auml* and *ouml* or *uuml* - replace the first asterisk with an & and the last one with a ;

    ä = ä
    ü = ü
    ö = ö

    Flix, Sauerkraut ist das selbe (nicht nur das gleiche) wie 'choucroute' (das Gewirr unter der Wurst, Kraut halt).

    And as for beer, right now I have a glass of Weissbier (yes, it's that large) with my selfmade pizza :yum: :bigeyes: :beer:

    Gotta love the beer, das Deutsche bier ist *way* mir besser than the Luxembourgische versionen. The ones they make here taste somehow half made.

    Oh yes, forgot to mention, my brother passed all his years of German by saing "Ja" to every question, the teachers simply said "Nein, nein, und noch mal NEIN! Was ist...[something something to another student]" and stopped paying attention to him for the rest of the hour. :p Lucky SOB.

    Trell,
    you see:

    Das deutsche Bier ist besser als das luxemburgische Bier.
    Das deutsche Bier schmeckt mir besser als das luxemburgische Bier.

    You are on the right track, only mixed up two variants to express what you think.

    Um die Umlautsbuchstaben zu schreiben:

    ä = ä
    Ä = Ä
    ö = ö
    Ö = Ö
    ü = ü
    Ü = Ü

    Oder setzen Sie Ihre Tastatureinstellungen zu "Deutch" oder "Schwedish"! :p

    (For those who haven't yet guessed: I have forgotten most of the German I learned back at school.)

    Deutsch, Monty :p

    Trell, you see:

    Das deutsche Bier ist (it is) viel (*way*) besser als das luxemburgische Bier.
    Das deutsche Bier schmeckt (tastes) mir viel (*way*) besser als das luxemburgische Bier.

    Without the 'mir' the sentence would still be valid, but abstract, saying that German beer is generally better than Luxembourgian beer. Which is true :shake: Anyway, with 'mir', of course, you're describing your impressions, as in: 'I' like it better than ...

    You are on the right track, only mixed up two variants to express what you think.

    Smart move! Had you ordered pommes frites only, you'd have to say:

    "(ei)'ne Pommes bitte."

    to which a follow up would be:

    'Ohne alles oder rot-weiß?'

    Which makes no sense, and is gramatically wrong, but asks you whether you want it with or without sauce (like without any (sauce)), or with both Ketchup and Mayonnaise. And nobody sais Pommes Frites, it's just Pommes :)

    Tip: The best Currywurst you usually get in the northern Ruhrgebiet. Some Westphalians would of course claim you get the best in Bielefeld (where the sausage is at times even barbecued). Gotta give them credit for that, but the key is the sauce, which is IMO better in the Ruhrgebiet.

    You get pretty decent ones at the platforms in Cologne Central Railwaystation.
