Usually, at which level do you start chapter 3 and why?

I think Chapter 3 starts when you pay the 15k to get information about Imoen. You can start it at any level, though usually you would try and finish a few of the side quests (ie Trademeet, Nalia's Keep, the Planar Sphere etc) just to get a few good item (you can do them when you get back, but they'll generally be less challenging and the loot might not seem as cool).

If I want Imoen back quickly, the group's average level is around 9. If I am in no hurry, I'll do most of the quests first and be about level 13-15.

I will either do one or the other: Complete every quest available before go to the underdark at which point I'm usually about lvl 18/19, or I run to get Imoen back first at which point I'm about level 10.

Is the chapter 3 doable right away after you exit the Irenicus's Dungeon? Of course, after collecting 15 000 gp, but that's just one quest (Mae'var and the Thief Stronghold)...

Haha! I started the chapter 3 for the first time ever! So much, excitement and electricity in the air! :D (btw, party average is lvl 11, or will be in a quest or two, and 14 days in game have passed...)

Yep, this route will be tougher, but its certainly not impossible and all the side quests will be a lot easier once you get back. Given that you need 15k and need to do a few quests for bodhi/shadow thieves I don't think the average level could be too terrible, even if you tried. Brynlaw isn't especially tough and even the harder parts of the Asylum are doable with a low level party by sticking together and falling back when required.

Congrats!! ToB can be picked up for a song these days - you should give that a shot, at least for completions sake.

My usual tactic is, do the Irenicus dungeon (which I could do blindfolded with one arm tied behind my back, I've been through it so many times...gah!), then the Circus, then head on over to Gaelen's.

I will then do almost every single quest before heading to Brynnlaw. That'll usually include Kangaxx (if I have Keldorn and Carsomyr...as you need at least a +4 weapon to hit Kangaxx...otherwise I'll wait until I come back) and Shangalar.

I must admit I've not tried picking up Imoen early - by the time you get back from the Underdark, there's a real sense of urgency (RP-wise) about getting Imoen's soul back and sorting out the whole Elven city mess, so it would seem a bit odd running off to do other quests first.

I almost always go for Imoen early, unless I want to gather enough experience to handle Watcher's Keep before chapter 3.;)

I don't know about that stuff, never played past chapter 4, but I think getting Imoen back is pretty urgent too!

In comparison to the happenings in chapter 6, saving Imoen is less urgent; Irenicus isn't killing her or anything, so she's safe enough (yes I realize that sounds terrible).

So that means this game is intended to have high replayability if you play it story-wise?

Man, I love it even more.

As games go BGII is one of the most replayable out there, plenty of us are going strong after a good 7 years and dozens of play-throughs

Not difficult at all. You've only got a drow city, a beholder lair and a small army of illithid. Oh, and a dragon if you feel like being evil

    :p

Nah, today I watched Dungeons & Dragons movie on TV, that guy Protion or whatever killed a dragon with ease at the beginning, why shouldn't I?

I'm no Jeremy Irons by my looks, but damn, how high charisma you need to kill a dragon?
