I'm usually pretty good at this, but a current tri-class has me a bit stumped. I'm playing a fighter-mage-cleric with a 10 in constitution (so no bonus) and at the start of the game I have 7 hps. I'm trying to figure out the breakdown, but I'm not sure how the rounding works. With no con bonuses the level 1 starting hitpoints would look like this:

    fighter - 10/3 = 3 1/3
    cleric - 8/3 = 2 2/3
    mage - 4/3 = 1 1/3

Which actually total to 7 1/3 so I understand why it's 7. The question really becomes what I'll get on level ups. When I level as a fighter, will it be theoretically possible to get 4 hps, or will the maximum be 3 hps? Will the cleric be able to get 3 hps just like the fighter or will the maximum be 2? Will the mage always get only 1 hp per level no matter what?

I went through the game a couple of times with a F/M/T and I'm pretty sure you only get 1 at a level up..

AFAIK the cleric would be able to get 3 hp per level but you probably have to try a few times I'm guessing.

If the game rounds to the nearest integer then it would make sense that fighter=3, cleric=3 and mage=1. That adds up to 7 as well, and it seems that's how things were calculated for the first level. The only way to be sure would be to do some testing with the game.

I read somewhere the game actually keeps track and rounds the total down. If true than on occasion you will see another point added as the fractions add to a whole.

I just can't remember where I read it at....

That actually seems realistic from what I'm observing. I've noticed that the cleric levels - which went up first - tend to only give me 2, whereas the fighter levels have always given me 3 - perhaps there are some added 1/3 in there that I keep benefitting from. I haven't seen the mage get more than 1 though.

I think I may try a few test cases with a fighter-thief with a 17 in constitution that should give a plethora of 1/2 hitpoints upon levelling.
