Uwe Boll promises to retire if 1 million people demand it

An online petition was started that demands for Uwe Boll to retire (get lost?) from filmmaking. Uwe Boll replied in an interview that it would take a million people signing for him to do so.

The question is... where do I sign up?

It was not exactly a promise in the original interview... After 1 million comes 1 billion perhaps? :-)
Anyway, I do not get it why you would want Mr. Boll to retire from filmmaking.

 

So who is this Uwe Boll and why should people sign the petition? If he sucks as a film maker, then wouldn't the market put him out of the business sooner or later?

 

Evidently not. For a while, there was some weird German tax law that made it profitable for him to make movies that, erm, weren't profitable. No, I don't know how that worked. Notably, none of his movies have scored higher than 5.0 on the imbd.

I think Alone in the Dark is reason enough for him to retire. That's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

 

So he just sucks as a filmmaker. It's not that he did something truly offensive...

 

He makes very bad movie adaptations of games (including Dungeon Siege, Postal, Bloodrayne and in the future, Far Cry). Imagine the day he might suddenly make movies of Baldur's Gate or Planescape... the horror.

He abuses German tax laws to fund his (non-profitable) movies.

He is recalcitrant, he doesn't give a damn about his target viewers (gamers and movie goers obviously) and he challenges (and proceeded to beat up) his critics in a boxing match (of course, you can argue that they were asking for it by agreeing to such a ridiculous challenge which I wholeheartedly agree). Not to mention he resorts to name calling and insults (video the youtube posted by AMaster and http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/08/you-dumb-fck-uw.html). This is what I really have against him.

 

For all it matters, I signed the petition. Approximately 850.000 people to go

My understanding is that the tax laws he was abusing have been amended. There's a million idiot filmakers in the world I don't like, and I simply don't watch their crap! Once those tax laws have been fully shut, his career will last for one more movie which will tank horrendously, then another try that will also tank, and his career will be deader than Liberace's libido at the Playboy mansion.

 

Even if this does get up to a million - which it won't - there's still no way he'll make good on the promise. As long as people keep buying his straight-to-DVD and in-theatres-for-five-minutes crapola, the movie studio who continues to make a quick buck off his buffoonery will continue to put him on their schedule. Ewe Boll sucks, we're unanimous in that - but he wouldn't have a job unless some people actually paid money to see this crap. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at them.

LKD, according to wiki he wasn't abusing the tax laws. He was using them as intended. American studios, with German partners, were abusing them. Apparently, the point of the laws is to get zee Germans to make zee movies using zee German companies. Uwe, by and large, does this.

I hang my head in shame and barely controlled laughter. The insolent, absurd ******* might almost have a point - I know people who watch his stuff to see for themselves what a really crappy movie looks like. It takes a certain genius, allright.
