How important is Spellcraft? I know that wizards need it to learn spells.

But, do clerics, sorcerers, paladins, and bards need spellcraft? And, if so how much pts into spellcraft is requred?

On a side note, am I correct in assuming only class that need arcane knowledge is a wizard?

I've never used it at all in any game for any character

I always used it on my wizard cause I hated scrolls going "POOF!" when I would attempt to write them into the spellbook. I always figured wizards needed it. Your wizard had no problems?

If the difficulty is set to easy you don't have spell scribing failures.
Another benefit of spellcraft is being able to see which spells enemy mages are casting, 10 spellcraft (including int modifier) is also a required for being able to take elemental feats like "spirit of flame" or "scion of storms".

If it's worth raising the skill depends on your playing style and how many skillpoints you've to spare.
Sorcerers can do more damage with elemental spells (20 percent extra fireball damage with the SoF feat for example), paladins, clerics and bards cast hardly any elemental spells.

Im still playing in *normal mode* :) insane and hof mode I didnt even bother trying yet, cause i die plenty in normal mode. :p

But, yah scribing failures occured enough for me that I got tired of reloading. hahaha.

So, basically from what I've gathered thus far is spellcrafting is not that important except on a wizard in normal mode. And, that sorcs, bards, pallies, clerics don't need it... am i right? rofl, just tripple checking before I make a new party.

I always end up starting from scratch once i get to chapter 4-5. Thats around the time I notice something in my party that I thought I could rebuild better.

I still haven't beaten the game yet. rofl, think thats one of the reasons i keep coming back to this game.

Human sorcs could use spellcraft to get the elemental feats, assuming you can spare the feats. For any other race, it's the difference between 3 INT and 12 INT -- not worth it. If you have a diplomat sorc, spellcraft might be the difference between 14 INT and 16 INT, which is a reasonable choice.

Spellcraft is a no-brainer for wizards, since they will have too many skill points, and four or more extra feats slots.

[IMG] Every character with spellcraft in the party requires another check for identification to be made for enemy spells that are being cast. Most powergaming-practical parties will just have one wizard, and wizards are the most optimal for high-INT, many skillpoints, and thus high Spellcraft. Like JT said, it's a no-brainer for wizards. ;)Still, I wouldn't be surprised if the druid's and/or sorcerer's prerequisite 10-15 (mod and race dependant) Spellcraft for elemental feats helps out now and then, if the wizard fails to make an identify-casting check.
having spells identified can really help you in your tactics:); you will know who to disrupt, and when, etc.

As noted earlier, with spellcraft, you can identify the spell that an enemy caster is casting, and possibly act accordingly.

I once noticed a powerful enemy caster starting up a Horrid Wilting spell, so I just plain ran in the other direction as fast as my party members could. And luckily was able to get out of the targeted zone before it hit. Obviously, not a tactic that would work in every circumstance, but it is an example of what the foreknowledge of an incoming spell might allow you to do.

rofl never really thought about running like that...

usually i would try to melee the caster in hopes of interrupting/killing the caster. Or, try to crowd control/mind control type of spell, or silence.

but, yah that running thing its so simple its brilliant!
