As an interesting point, I heard today that in Iceland they are appointing a new leader of the country (edit she's the Prime Minister, save the napalm in your flamethrowers, joaquin got there first) and it is not only a woman, it is a gay woman! IIRC, that is a first for any country -- correct me if I'm wrong. I hope she is successful!

OK, found an article, which I shoulda read a little more closely, but nevertheless!:

Did you read the article you linked man? It quite clearly states prime minister, no biggy but you could have saved yourself a few semi-flames there. ;)

As for this, I actualy saw it on the news today about a new prime in Iceland and they said nothing about her sexuality. More about what a complete and utter mess she is supposed to clean up.

You forgot the elderly bit too... elderly lesbian prime minister is almost certainly a first. :shake: Good for her!

She has a near impossible task ahead of her if she's to drag the country out of this mess without seriously pissing people off. The financial sector is ruined and won't be coming back any time soon. Their current account shows a huge deficit, their currency is worthless and they are in the middle of a disasterous stagflation. What she has to do is get Iceland to the EU, Euro (not possible) and get a lot of creditors (which is difficult in this global economy). There is a general election incoming there anyhow this year if I don't remember all incorrectly so we'll se if she'll even last a year in the office. I know I would not want to be politically responsible for the disaster that country's in.

66 is no longer elderly. :) Especially for a head of state. Good luck to her.

I know that the recession is world wide, but what the hell man? I mean Iceland is REALLY jacked up. I had initially heard about the economic meltdown a couple of weeks ago - I had assumed that things were starting to at least get a little better since then - evidently not.

Elderly (oops! I mean middle-aged! :D), female, gay. Big deal. If she was black, then that would be notable. :p

Anyway, good luck to her. That country has some serious doodoo to clean up.

The Icelanders didn't understand that the Financial Crisis and their subsequent bankruptcy was just a warning that God was mad with them because of teh gays. With their new president being an abomination they're headed straight to Armageddon ... expect volcanoes erupting and parts of their country being turned into ashes ...

According to WHO 65 and above is elderly.

Can't really understand why the gay part has to get such a big role around here. We've had gays since the old Greeks which is around 2500 years.

Ancient, gay Greece was conquered by the Romans, who became gay too, and then their empire collapsed. The conclusion is obvious. Gayness is infectious, and ruinous. And an abomination of course.

Ragusa, doesn't that comment belong in the marriage thread?

It could provide fuel to Gnarff's fire....

Well, they already do have a few of those, so I'm not sure they'd notice. Something more unusual like a plague of locusts would probably get their attention, though.

Interestingly, tax-and-spend liberals (when they know what they're doing) are historically a good answer to an economic depression. Spend the money on public works projects and the like to create and promote jobs (not just with gov't, but with gov't providers as well), and you can put a big boost in the economy. As long as she has good advisors, this may go well.

As to volcanos, yeah, as I hear it, Iceland has so much geothermal activity, they don't even use hot water heaters in their cities, they pump the hot water from geothermal springs. Go for flies and frogs, that'll get their attention.

"What is this strange, bizzare, biting insect? And what are those odd green, ugly, bloated things eating them? This must be a message from God, such things cannot be natural!" :)

    NOG,
    better safe than sorry.

Many Puritans were accustomed to submitting to the perceived will of God. So much, that, until Benjamin Franklin invented his insurance against God's wrath, the lightning rod, it was the custom for New England fire brigades to let a lightning-struck house burn and focus on protecting the houses around it. Obviously, the inhabitant had it coming :shake:

I didn't make that up, found it on Wiki - so it must be true :holy:
