Personally I think that most woman who 'boob up' would be better served with investing their money into psychotherapy. Or think of what plastic surgeons have done to Michael Jackson and other people. Yuck. Here is a reminder of what plastic surgery was originally conceived for - to help those who suffered burns and other disfiguring injuries.

Reason I write that little rant is the story of Connie Gulp. Her face was destroyed with a shotgun blast. She got a new face, that was transplanted to her face from a dead woman. A little creepy for sure, but if you look at the photos you'll easily understand why, and how greatly she improved. God bless the surgeon who was able to do that.

Read the whole story here. Good luck for her, and good recovery.

It is a bit creepy to get somebody else's face but that woman really deserved a second chance!
Personally, I've contemplated a breast reduction as I'm a 38JJ and my boobs weigh over a stone each. This was for medical reasons rather than apperance as I suffer from a bad back. However, I love having huge boobs and don't think I can go through with it.

 A stone as in 14 pounds? Each? I didn't even know JJ was a size - I didn't even know that the size chart went that high! (maybe it's and England thing).

See, I told you TMI Silvery. Now Aldeth is not going to be very productive at work today thinking of stone weight and weight to volume ratios and pendulum swings....

Silvery, I'd go for it. There's big, and then there's medically dangerous (or at least, that which produces medical suffering).

To Ragusa, I don't know what the law is, especially in different regions, but I seem to recall reading that many places that do cosmetic surgery require a mental screening before anything is done. I would definitely support any movement to make that mandatory if it isn't already.

Wow, that's... You had me speechless for quite a while, Silvery. I hope you find a solution that works for you in both health and self-image terms.

Anyway, as for the OP, yes, I'd say that is definitely a case of plastic surgery for the right purposes. I think there is still something very unsettling about Mrs. Culp's face, but it's definitely an improvement.

It looks like she may have suffered some muscle/nerve damage as well as everything else. That kind of thing isn't so simply repaired, and she may have to live with it for the rest of her life.

What do you think the penalty should be for doing that to someone's face? I believe it was her husband who did it. Monstrous... Personally, I don't think life in prison is enough.

The article said he got seven years... Though, if I understand it correctly, he shot himself afterwards. For all that matters, I'd be surprised if he's looking any better than she does.

NOG, in the third paragraph the article said that her nerves are supposed to grow and circulation should improve, at which point the surgeons plan to remove the folds around her cheeks. Perhaps some of it could be repaired or at least ameliorated. Frankly, it is a small miracle her face has been reconstructed as it was, but I do hope it does get better.

It was her husband who shot her. Her medical team had looked at other solutions before going for the transplant I believe

It would also be helpful to see what she looked like before she was shot in the face. She received a face transplant, but from what I understand, when they say "finding a match" they mean finding a match with blood type, genetic markers, etc. Not a match meaning someone who looks like you. Is the face she has now similar to the one she had before getting shot? Or does she look like a completely different person? I do concede that anything would be better than the way she looked in the "before" picture, but to have a totally different face would be... unsettling.

True, but a lot less unsettling than the disaster the shotgun blast left her with.

7 years for what he did is inexcusable, and just underscores my position that the legal systems of western democracies are totally out of synch with common sense and decency.

From what I heard, they used skin, nerves and bones. I would guess that finding a match would similar to finding a match for a kidney doner or something

I hate to say this, but perhaps the husbands intent was to kill her. That doesnt in anyway excuse what he did, but perhaps it at least means he didnt shoot her in order to purposefully maim and disfigure her. I dont know which is the more serious crime to be honest - purposeful disfigurement or attempted murder. Either way, 7 years is too kind. He should have got life.

I'm happy that her looks have at least improved as much as they have. She will probably never fully recover, but at least she should be able to lead a life as normal as possible.

What was this guy convicted of? (I'm looking for something more specific than "shooting his wife in the face".) If he was convicted of criminal negligence, then it is possible he accidently shot her in the face, which would also explain the light prison sentence.

If, on the other hand, he deliberately shot her in the face, then I say it is not only possible but likely that his intent was to kill her. I cannot fathom why anyone would deliberately shoot someone in the face without the likely result being the death of that individual. However, if he deliberately shot her, than the charge would have been attempted murder, and that definitely would be a lot longer prison sentence.

Then again, the article also says that the man turned the gun on himself after shooting his wife, so maybe it was attempted murder, but he got off with a light sentence because he was deemed mentally insane.

I got the impression from an earlier article I read it was a botched murder-suicide -- he tried to kill her and he tried to kill himself. He failed on both attempts -- with a shotgun. He probably got the seven years for attempted murder.

maybe he got 7 years for not knowing how to kill with a gun?

Anyways, its great to see this medical science being used for good instead of self indulgence.

Silvery, maybe you should have the reduction, if your suffering with your back, you need to think about your future.

Connie Culp is very lucky to have had this chance. The face she has now is a far cry from her previous appearance.http://www.frugal-cafe.com/public_html/frugal-blog/frugal-cafe-blogzone/2009/05/06/profile-of-courage-connie-culp-worlds-first-face-transplant-recipient/
Cases like Connie are why I support plastic surgery. Yes, many people get it for superficial reasons, but IMO (I'll admit I have not researched this much) the elective surgeries are the driving force behind the funding that has allowed this woman to have a rebuilt face.

Not to be a negative, but the paid surgery helps to finance the means, and help to develop the tools and expertise to help the woman from the first post.

If a breast enlargement/reduction or nose job makes people happy and they pay for it with hard earned money nobody can object. You cannot say which type of operation is legal, until force comes into play.
