Hi, im also new to this forum

I have managed to get torment playing on a old pc and I have never played it before.
I got out of the mortuary ok but then decided to read a walkthrough to see if I had done it right? But I didnt see this Deionarra woman I didnt do some needle and thread quest and lots of other stuff, I think I killed Ei-Vene before she alerted some guards of something.
Anyway do you think I should start over before I get any further?

Thanks for any help, hope I've not annoyed anyone with this post

Ei-Vene is not needed for any future quests. You will have the chance to talk to Deionarra at a later time.

This is a game where you should definately save often. As you found out from Ei-Vene there are multiple ways to complete any part of the game. There are times you may want to follow a different conversation path and determine the right one for you -- hence, save before talking to people (and before killing someone, etc.).

You can always get into the Mortuary again to speak to Deionarra. Spoiler - how to:

    Just get yourself killed! :)

Deionarra can teach you a useful ability so you may want to do this. Spoiler - ability:

    How to Raise dead companions.

Ei-Vene could have given you a small XP bonus and an even smaller HP bonus but it's not worth restarting the game for.

Helping Ei-Vene in the mortuary can also give a more beneficial dialogue option later in the game.

There's no need to restart if you don't want to, the little bonuses you didn't get can be easily overcompensated by fighting a few extra respawning monsters, but this isn't even needed, you can easily finish the game without.

I would reccomend checking out some of the mods on SP. There are some I wish I would have found before I finished the game.

T2 probably thinks this goes without saying, and he's probably right, but: save often in different save slots

OK thanks for all the replies, sorry that my reply is late

I did restart the the game but this was days ago, so now I'm further than I was before.

I picked fighter because it seemed better for a beginner but I am worried its too easy to get people angry (and make them your enemy) and then you have to load your go again. Just seems I'm always saving and loading - I begin to forget where I am.
There is a clock in the bottom left of the screen and it might say 2:30am but when I save, the time on the saved go is 19:30? I have checked the computer clock and its right - I am in england and it is summer time but I cant follow what time the saved games are?

I'm not really trying to complain so sorry if it sounds a bit nasty, its just I had always heard how great this game was and was really hoping it would be good..

    thanks again for the help

oh - and the spoiler buttons are very cool

You don't have any choice but to start as a fighter. The Nameless One is a unique being and does not have the same character class restrictions as typical for 2nd Edition AD&D. You will have the opportunity to learn other classes later -- and I'd recommend you do -- however, TNO can only be one class at a time and you'll need to figure out how to shift between classes.

Conversations are extremely important in PS:T -- you will find more experience is awarded in conversations than in fighting. Often a peaceful approach is more advantageous for many reasons. But the game doesn't limit you to being a political, spineless wimp -- you can also be an aggresive jerk (or as one of our members used to say, "a right bastard") and still get through the game.

There are really only a few people you need to worry about getting angry -- but then killing everyone in Sigil will get one of those angry.

Your saved games are probably based on the real life time you saved, not Sigil time.

You don't have to reload when people get angry, just kill them.
And if they kill you instead don't worry, you're immortal.
You'll wake up in the mortuary or another place without having lost anything.
If you feel too wimpy to survive a battle send Morte to the frontline, just make sure your character is the first party member to die, having to reequip inventory for other party members is annoying.

The time shown on a savegame reflects the game time since you started. You start the game at 7:00 AM on the first morning, so 2:30 in the morning would be a number of days + 19:30 hours later.

As for conversations, follow T2's advice. Oh, and don't speak to the generic Dustmen in the Mortuary, only the named ones (Dhall, Ei-Vene, Soego). Outside the Mortuary, leave the Thugs and Abishai alone and hope the Thugs leave you alone. ;)

thank you for posting help with the game, I am still figuring it out but it makes more sense now.
I did restart (yet again ) because a guide had told me being a fighter is easier, I know 'T2Bruno' said "You don't have any choice but to start as a fighter"
but I meant I had mentally decided to be a fighter and the walkthrough said put points into STR and DEX and that INT and WIS and not important for a fighter.
'Now' I have read the most important quality in the game is wisdom (which I had not boosted) so that is why I've started over again. (How are you supposed to know WIS is most important when you start the game?)

And I wanted to try and make this go as good as possible because if I finish the game I probably wont really play it again (well, maybe I will)

It seems more interesting this time though, the answers are different
So I am going to try to be a 'mage' not a fighter and have boosted WIS INT and CHR

    One last question please -
When I level up I have no idea where to put the point I get - Do I just keep adding to WIS INT and CHR or should I boost DEX? I really havent I clue what is best and have read guides but they start to tell you all about the game - bits I havent got to yet!

    Thanks again

You can still be a fighter -- just a high wisdom fighter. There are many points in the game which give you ability jumps (wisdom being the most common). I think if you give yourself ~18 wisdom early on you will be close to maxing it later in the game.

If you want to pursue thieving -- and I recommend you level in all three classes for many reasons (more hit points, adds flavor to the game, ...) -- then you should bring your dex up. You need a minimum of 9, but I think 13 or 14 is good.

Charisma helps in a very important discussion later on and you should be close to 16 when you leave Sigil (but you can use charms for that, I don't like to rely on charms though). Intelligence will really help with one of your npc's. You should boost that to 18 or 19 eventually.

Constitution is the last of the abilities to raise IMO -- your immortal, you really don't care how many hit points you have (other than constantly waking up in odd places can be annoying).

Strength is an interesting topic. It's always good to have, especially for a fighter.

I try to have my strength at 18 by the time I'm 7th level. At 7th and 12th levels you get a big boost in ability, the boost is dependant on the class you level in. Leveling at both in the same class results in a bigger gain overall than, say, leveling in fighter at 7th and leveling in mage at 12th. These two levels should be taken in your primary class (the one you want to be most of the time). Normal strength progress goes to 18, then through the 'exception strength' grouping until you finally get to 19 -- it progresses normally above 19. It takes six ability points to go from 18 to 19 normally. Exceptional strength is bypassed with two specific strength gains; one is near the end of the game so is not really useful, the other is the level 7 fighter ability jump -- it can take you from 18 to 19 in one swift jump.

I'd keep dex down to 9, even as thief. You've to invest too much for a little benefit.
Con is the most powerful stat, it doesn't affect dialogues at all but can make you nearly invulnerable. But if you started with 9 you have to spend too much to gain a benefit and the game will be over before it gets high enough.
High strength is nice to have, 18 str + str tattoo = 19 str but unless you've already more than 12 use spells to get it up instead, they add up with tattoos too.
16 wisdom is quite good, 19 is better, but when you have 19 don't raise it any more at level up, there are other ways to reach 25.
Int isn't important, if you need to have it high temporarily you can just eat talismans and mage tattoos usually also raise int as side effect. Don't raise it too high, if you have natural 16 raising it is totally wasted, in this case better wear tattoos for 18.
Cha isn't very important either, you can get 25 with friends spells, for dialogues you can consider 16 as perfect.

having a high wisdom is definatly a good point for the game.

You can hack and slash your way through the game if you want to, but to experience the truley rewarding torment you should have a high wisdom.

You really ought to stop reading all those guides and walkthroughs and just play the game. If you keep going like this you'll end up as a chronic restarter. Otherwise you might as well read up on everything you can find and follow Dan Simpsons walkthrough step-by-step, because you will be missing out on a lot in your first run through.

excellent advice olimikrig. Play through the game for the first time liia and know that our envy is with you. Most who read this thread would love to be new to the game.

That's my only major gripe with PST: once you know what happens and how things go and you replay it, you lose that something special that you can only feel on the first playthrough. That feeling of bewilderment, of being in a place where all the familiar rules need not apply and you have no idea what the new rules are, or what's going on.

You can kill One-ear if you wish, but you get better XP for lying to him about having power over the "dead" that is "haunting" him. You're generally rewarded for choosing non-violent options in this game.

There are only a few people you shouldn't attack - those who have vital clues to your progress through the game:

    Pharod
Iannis the Advocate in Clerk's Ward (before you get your legacy from him)
Quell in the Civic Festhall (until he tells you the portal key is a piece of Ravel - I'm not sure about this one)
Ravel (before finishing the dialogue with her, then the fight becomes inevitable)
Trias (in Curst Prison; in Carceri the fight is inevitable)

    (I might have forgotten some)
