Yeah, I had always thought Mars was about 2/3 the size of Earth. Turns out, it's less than a quarter!

 

This topic would be pretty boring if it wasnt.

Actually, no. Mars apparently has 15% the volume of the Earth.

 

seems lots of sites disagree on the size of mars

but add to this, the book wasnt discussing the planets being compacted, it was discussing the diameter of 2 mars's side by side

so, when you were discussing size, you wanted volume, instead of diameter or mass which is even smaller still

 

Mars, also called Barsoom, is filled with a variety of interesting species including red, green, yellow, white and black martians -- contrary to the popular misconception that mars is only populated with "little green men." In actuality the green martians aren't little at all, but rather stand over ten feet and are surprising powerful (Tars Tarkas being a shining example of the race).

Red martians are nearly human and quite compatible with them (which may explain so many abductions). Only one known "marriage" exists between an earth human and red martian -- that of John Carter and Dejah Thoris.

Exactly Shoshino - it's all about how you compare sizes. Mars doesn't look as small compared to earth when you compare diameters of the planets. However, as I'm sure you're aware, the formula for the volume of a sphere is (4/3) Pi r3 ------- the equation looks really dumb when you try to type it on a computer screen. The point being is that you cube the radius in the formula, so Mars comes out looking a lot smaller when you compare volumes. Comparing diameters, Mars is about half the size of Earth. When you cube that and compare volume, Mars is about 1/8 the size of Earth.

 

I though Marvin the Martian is Red? He's quite small. And not very compatible with anyone, especially rabbits and ducks.

 

He's obviously a dwarf of the species. Either that, or a child. That'd explain a lot.

 

Must be a dwarf, nobody species gives a kid that kind of gun.

 

I believe Marvin is a black martian (just look at his face). Black martians are quite known for being evil and wanton killers -- they are often pirates.

 

Nope, his arms and legs are red, his face is hidden, the black is shadow. But, he is a evil little b*****d, so he could be a pirate, though I woinder what type of bird sits on his shoulder?
