I think, for one thing, the response entirely depends on whether the man's lawyer's claims are accurate. If he really didn't know he was being taped and/or didn't know it was going to be aired in Saudi Arabia (since it's a Lebanese TV station), then I don't think he should be punished, just the TV station. If he did know, however, then I think their sentence is, if not fair or open-minded by our standards, at least just. In that case it would seem he knowingly broke their laws and should be punished according to those laws.

We inturrupt this thread for a public service announcement:

Attention Kitrax! Attention Kitrax! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT vacation in Saudi Arabia.

We now resume normal thread protocol....

I agree NOG, if he broke Saudi Law, he should be punished. I think lashing is a bit excessive, if jail time is also required. Lashing? Holy crap, for boning a few chicks and talking about it? I sure am glad I don't live there. There ways are archaic to say the least.

I do find it somewhat ironic that it isn't the 'boning' he's getting punished for, but talking about it later. Is this some sort of "What happens in Saudi Arabia stays in Saudi Arabia" thing?

I think it's both. They didn't catch him boning the women, but his admittance on TV was the needed "evidence". Nice pun though!:)

He should be punished because he broke the laws of his country, but damn, those laws suck! They should not be there in the first place... people should be free to talk about their sexuality.

I don't know why, but adding "entire" to the statement makes it much funnier.

Especially if you're a guy! This is the type of punishment I'd expect in Saudi Arabia if the perpetator was a woman. (Or would she just be executed?) Not only is Saudi Arabia ultra-conservative, there is also a very obvious double standard concerning sexuality and sexual norms as they concern women compared to men.

It's one thing to say that the law is just and another to say that the person, knowing the law and breaking it anyway, should still be punished. The first is a matter of ethics and morality. The second is a matter of respecting an institution and accepting reality. If the guy knew that he was being taped and recognized that it may well be broadcast in Saudi Arabia, no matter what his moral reasoning, he knowlingly broke the law. Even if he did it in an effort to change the law, he still should expect punishment.

For the record I did a quick search on the web and found out that France exported about $1.5 million worth of lingerie to Saudi Arabia in 1998... A friend of mine who worked in lingerie exports told me they go for the really kinky stuff over there. Go figure. :shake:

Oh and don't even think on getting started on the topic of vaginal reconstruction for girls who want to pass as virgins.

Unfortunately my friend no longer works in lingerie exports. Since you seem to be interested I can say that she's currently working in oil exports... :p

Hmm, a friend told me a friend of hers was working in a lingerie shop in France, and the Arabic women there did have a taste for erotic lingerie. So it wasn't just those in the immoral, Allahless West :) .

Bah, those numerical stages look like thin air. They kinda seem to show the liberal is better than conservative. :p Plus, they stink, because according to them, relativism is the higher stage of morality, which is pure nonsense. They promote the idea of amalgamating your principles with other people's principles and doing things which are thus not in complete accordance with your principles but for which you're completely responsible. Bah, humbug.

As for the topic, I'm not a big fan of corporal punishment and I believe governments should generally stay at least a yard away from people's clothed bodies and not taking your shirt off your back and whipping you. On the other hand, bragging about sex is silly and immoral. Life would be better if people had ordered, healthy sexual lives (i.e. marriage, mutual commitment, responsibility and love) and didn't talk about the private details with strangers. Governments do have some interest in upholding public morality.

So which is it? You are against corporal punishment, but governments have have an interest in upholding public morality? So you are OK with the imprisonment, but not with the whip?

It's a difficult thing to legislate taste, though some lines should be drawn, primarily on when such views are broadcast. Punishing people via the legal system for being perverts is a slippery slope. I'm certainly against the Saudi whippings.

But as near as I can tell, this guy basically aired some dirty laundry and the Saudi elite felt that it's repuation had been tarnished. IMHO they should focus more on their reputation in terms of human rights rather than busting some low level pervert for talking about his sexploits on the air.
