Finished SoA with 5 characters, now I'd like to add one

I can't seem to understand how importing custom characters work. I just finished SoA and watchers keep in it with Yoshimo. I somehow managed to miss out on that harper guy in the random encounter, but apart from that i think i did some 90% of the random quests before spellhold, and i ended up with a lot of and very high level chars. I left yoshimo at the coronet before going to spellhold. Naturally when i came back he died, so i reloaded and got him via the fast talk trick.

Now when i've done hell with him, he dies as soon as ToB starts (this is the first time im trying to play ToB). Now i have a party that consists of myself (sorceror), Minsc, Keldorn, Aerie and Jaheira, and i have no thief.

I really liked yoshimo because of his traps, but i didn't know how to dual him. I would like to create a similar character, a decent level thief (i like the backstabs and 5 snares) which i could dual to a fighter.

But have no idea how to do this....

    Help!

Have you tried starting in multiplayer? Import your main character and make one -- either that or just ask for Jan (he's great in ToB). Jan has the best lines with Minsc and Keldorn (although you missed out on a lot already). As an illusionist/thief he's quite powerful and you really don't need another fighter with Minsc, Keldorn and Jaheira. If you would rather have a fighter, take Sarevok (hands down the best tank in the game) -- he can be dualled to thief (but you won't get his fighter levels back until near the end).

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I didn't dare go too much into the game (i reached the dialog with sarevok) before i make sure what i'm going to do with my last character.

I'm not sure how multiplayer works. I tried to pre-generate my thief and i saved it in a file. But all that i can import from the save games is my main character. It seems that i cannot launch with just two characters (the button is grayed out).

I must admit that i never really fully understood the ad&d concept, probably because i've been a pc kid since the beginning, or maybe i'm just like that. I hacked in one of those bottomless bags of holding, and i just stash everything inside it. I keep wands and scrolls in the inventory but i've only used a handful throughout the game. I never buy them, and whenever i need one, i don't seem to have it so i play by the skills and permanent effects of my party.

So it makes sense that my main character is a sorcerer, i have two tanks (minsc and keldorn) and i hardly use any magic other than restoration and raise dead from jaheira and aerie.

Thats why i wanted a pure thief, or perhaps a fighter/thief because i think that it would just make him a more effective fighter (more proficiency slots? but this is probably wrong as i dont understand the concept of dualing).

If you want to add another custom-made character besides your PC it can only be done via multiplayer.

The first thing you will need to do is to create a multiplayer game. Start it and save it (it doesn't matter what characters you put in).

Doing this will create the "mpsave" (multiplayer save) folder in your BG2 game folder, which you can access through windows explorer.
Note that your BG2 game folder will also contain a simple "save" folder which contains the files for your single player games.
Now the trick to adding your customized character is to copy your game file from the single player save to the multiplayer save (make a backup copy just in case).
You will then need to start BG2, load the multiplayer game, add in your character, save the game, exit, and transfer the multiplayer save file back to the single player save folder.

Pre-generated characters are saved as character files. You will notice that when you click the "import" button you will be asked to choose between saved game files and character files. The thief you made earlier should still be nicely saved as a character file.
To start a multiplayer game you need to click the check button on the right of each character's names first. :)
It's a too-simple feature that has fooled a lot of people.

It never hurts to check what the merchants have for sale every once in a while. Not all the best items in the game are looted.

Nothing wrong with that. Most of my early games were like that heh. Magic makes your life easier though, try experimenting with other spells and keep the ones you think are useful.

Dual-classing is complicated. You might be better off using the site's search function since the older posts should be able to explain the specifics better than I can.
Basically tho "dual-classing" is something humans do. Other races have "multi-classing". To dual-class, a human must give up leveling in his present class and start from level 1 in a new class. His old class will be inactive (you gain no other benefit from it except extra HP) until his new class becomes 1 level higher than his old one. After that his old class becomes active again, and whatever better stats he had in his old class will *replace* the weaker ones of his new class (like THAC0 and proficiencies). He will never be able to gain levels in his old class again, however. "Multi-classing" is simpler - you basically gain levels in two classes from the start.

Why don't you just pick up Sarevok and dual him to a thief?

My party has an average of 4.200.000 xp, maybe i should cheat some xp to sarevok and raise him to that level.

Though, wouldn't it be a shame for sarevok to miss out on some really awesome plate armor. I was thinking perhaps a kensai/thief.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 21 minutes and 20 seconds later... ----------

I put my sorcerer and the new thief. And saved.

Not sure about this. I have overwritten the multiplayer save, .sav file with the file from the normal game. Although, the file that i used is the .sav file from a quicksave of an already started TOB game (point at the beginning in that pocket plane).

I did this but, it behaves like i havent done anything, it just loads it up with my two characters, and the same items.

    *edit*

I figured it out, i didn't copy the game file as well :) Many thanks!
