Let's disregard their size then and focus on the potential mental damage this puts on a kid. Are we showing her that tasing someone, even kids, is ok? What about how that experience can affect the child? Tasing or inflicting pain on any child is never the right choice. Never. It will only confuse them and steer them onto the wrong path. If a child is becoming a problem child, it is the responsiblity of the parent and any other adult who makes decisions in their upbringing, to have patience and try over and over to educate them about what they are doing is wrong. Even if they think the kid needs to be hauled away to a Juvenile center, they are going there to be helped, not imprisoned. Tasing is the wrong answer. It teaches nothing.

Just to play devil's advocate, what was the officer supposed to do? I'm assuming that shooting her or clubbing her with a baton was out the question. Clearly a sternly worded command to halt was ineffective (anybody remember the movie Demolition man?). I guess he could have somehow physically restrained her, but that may have been dangerous to him and to her.

I'm not ready to condemn the guy as I'm sure I don't have all the facts and what he did may turn out to be the only reasonable response.

I know, I was just teasing (albeit about a bad subject to tease). I know you aren't a pedophile, don't worry.

I did read it as 'tasting' first, though, but my first assumption was that it was a topic about some horrible pedophilic act that you were informing us about, not that you were telling us something about your personal preferences.

She was 10. You're trying to tell me a grown man couldn't restrain a 10 yr old girl? Come on Snook. He could restrain her and cuff her, just like they do any adult perp, with more ease to boot. Or, if he actually couldn't restrain her, which I highly doubt, he could've called in for assistance. If he was afraid of hurting her, why did he then make the judgement call to use a Taser? 63 people in North America have been killed by police Tasers. Why risk killing a child? Even an unruly one?

this is why kids are completely out of control today, because noone has the balls to discipline them.

and for you to think that a police officer should allow himself to be treated like crap without exerting force boggles my mind, society is going to the dogs and its bleeding heart liberals like you who are causing it.

blades, you ever been kicked in the balls? my 3 year old niece hit me there completely by accident, I ended up with testicular tension and nearly lost one. this officer was assulted and he reacted in a non lethal way to subdue his assailant

Bleeding Heart Liberal? LOL! Well, that's a 1st. Normally, most would label me on the other side of that spectrum. Read the Anti-depressant thread. With kids though, I feel differently. I could be biased with having 2 little girls. I use to think otherwise, then I became a parent. It alters your thinking, Shoshino. Or better yet, it simplifies your thinking. I look at it from one solid standpoint. Would I ever want to see me kid Tasered? No way.

My 2 yr old threw a huge tantrum because, after being sick for 3 days, she had to go back to daycare today. She kicked, scratched and clutched on to everything she could to not have to go to the car. I didn't beat her. I spoke to her at length. Guess what happened? She eventually got into the car. Who would of thought? Do you know why I would never want them tased? Because I love them.

I never actually considered tasing a child to be a form of discipline.

    From the article

I'm a soccer coach and have been since my son was 9. I have had more than one "special needs" kid on my team and there have been incidents when I have been legitimatly scared on how to possibly "restrain" somebody who loses their faculties and all control. If I was the officer, I'm not quite sure that I would be willing to wade into that brand of craziness to restrain someone. If you haven't seen what it is like when an autistic or ADD/HD kid loses it, it is a special brand of crazy.

I'm not condoning the use of a stun gun, but I'm certainly not willing to blame the guy. I can understand why the department suspended him for not having the camera operating. If he had, I'm sure we would all have a much better understanding of why he chose to use the stun gun.

Is there mention of the kid having mental or autistic issues? She didn't want to shower or go to bed, so mom called the cops is what i'm reading. That was the 1st wrong choice. Try parenting instead. It's tough and requires great patience with some kids. But she choose to be a parent, she should try doing it. I know she is divorced, so for pit's sake, let's ignore that point for the moment and move to the next problem. Then, when the cop arrived and the child was unruly, why not call for assistance or help from other officers. Obviiously he couldn't or wouldn't handle her. So you go to tasing? 2nd bad choice of the day.

Seems like tasing is going to be the next big thing in raising children then.

Once again, from the article you linked to.

That is a pretty big red flag to me. Emotional problems is a very broad description which can mean all sorts of things.

Agreed. "Emotional problems" probably doesn't mean autism specifically, but it is a typical code word for psychological problems. She's probably on meds, in therapy, or both already, depending on the actual problem.

And yes, a child that size can seriously injure an adult male. And again, yes, an adult male can seriously injure a child that size, even if he's trained to work safely.

Now, again, I'd personally go for the broken arm and the tried-and-true method than tasing her and risking death, but the decision isn't an easy one.

I wonder if she screamed, "Don't Tase me bro!!!"

Seriously though, tasing a 10 year old...and possibly breaking an arm/leg by accident? WTF? Whatever happened to a open palmed slap upside the head to snap someone out of it and behave?

Actually, if the cop did that, there'd be a pretty nice lawsuit before you could count to 10. I don't think there's a police force in this country that would abide such an action by one of its members.

It's actually pretty pathetic that a slap upside the head will get you sued, but tasering won't. (Not that I necessarily condone the former.)

Not saying the latter won't get you sued, but it's in protocol, and slapping someone upside the head is only protocol in movies.

A mother who called the cops cause she can't get her own child to take a bath? Wow. A lot of credibility there.

from what I read the child has no issue with being agressive, abusive and violent, once again I repeat, we werent there, how do we know that she didnt assult her mother? the article is designed to make people think that the officer was in the wrong, theyve left out any information which could explain what happened, much like the Guardian do here.
