That is good news Tal! I had a very large number of languages listed so I had to settle (reluctantly) for the European bias and group some languages together.

Still the only French native speaker. :(

Unfortunately I happen to live in a French speaking province, so I was raised in French. I have a very strong preference for English, though.

English, the language of Shakespheare (sort of :)). I'm only second generation, so there was still some German spoken in our household, but only by my mom and both her parents. I continued on for a while, and took German in both HS and college, along with some Spanish (just one year of Spanish in college). I always wanted to learn either French or Italian, but could not find the time (Italian was never offered). But in medieval studies, French was the language of choice.

I did have to learn some Middle English for a Chaucer class. What pain that was.

    I feel your pain. ;)

Still, I'm glad I was starting to feel a little bit isolated as a French speaker. :p

I have a deep rooted fascination and interest for the English language but I'm glad I was raised as a French speaker. French is really a hard language to master. Many things about it don't make much sense when you try to explain them.

I love Shakespeare and I had to study both the Bard and Chaucer at university. I didn't find Middle English that hard thanks to my limited German and my knowledge of French. You can really tell the influence of French in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Other texts in Middle English were much harder. I took some Old English but it was like studying a completely different language. Still, I really enjoyed taking these classes.

Much appreciated indeed. I ran into British tourists the other day and they were asking about the cathedral in French, I replied in English but they insisted on speaking French. At least I knew they got the direction right. :)

@Triactus: 3 is a pretty good number, we're back in the race! At the very least we're toe to toe with the German speaking minority. ;)

I'm actually from France. I grew up near the Alps but I live in Lyon (Lyons in English, Lugdunum in Latin) namely the second largest city and the capital of French gastronomy.

I always make an effort to learn please and thank you in the language of the country I'm going to. If possible, I make the effort to learn how to say I don't speak the language. It's just rude if you don't! I hate those people (generally us Brits) who think that if you just speak louder and slower people will understand you!

Here we go again... you preachy do-goody.

As for speaking the language of the place one goes to... I had absolutely no problem blending in with Americans, and was even asked for directions by tourists, which was ironic.

As for liking to speak French... good for you, but I would speak English 24/7/365 if I could.

Dutch. Being a Dutchman my options are limited. There are a few of us here. So far only one has made time to fill in the Poll. This lack of effort bothers me.

I've got a slight French accent when speaking English, but I was told that since that weekend in NYC, the accent is barely noticeable.
