Actually there are two character who only have 1 specialization and they are Sten and Loghain. There are two NPC witouth specialization Shale and the dog.

 

Okie-dokie...I just got to Ostagar. This is one part of the game that I didn't know what the f*** I was doing last time, so I did very little before the joining.

Anything worth doing in Ostagar before I get tossed out in the wilds?

 

There's a short quest involving a caged prisoner that's worth starting before you leave. There's also an elven messenger running about who will give you a reasonably nice item if you pass a persuade check.

Other than that, the only thing worth doing is talking to the quartermaster, as his supplies are a good price and he has a backpack for sale.

The rest of the camp is just setting the scene really, so its up to you whether you bother with it.

 

There's a couple of things you can do if your cunning is high or if you have coercion. You can try and gain and audience with Teyrn Loghain by talking to his guard. You can also try talking with prince Cailan's guard and the warriors in charge of the hounds. All of these should give you codex entries and some XP.
Finally don't forget to talk to the guy in charge of Dog.

Right I should have said human characters and my statement would almost have been correct. Nitpicker!

 

Loghain is human.

 

The Sten is not human.

 

I thought Sten was human just from a different part of the world.

 

Sten is a Qunari- they are a separate race entirely.

True, but he is a douchebag...

I plan on leaving that moron in his cage this time around so he can be eaten by the darkspawn...or maybe I'll just execute him for the chantry.

 

I don't know. It's easy to hate his guts but he is a very interesting character and once you get to know him you may actually enjoy having him in the party.

 

Ok, so I got though Ostagar. The 2 guards you get were completely useless. I had to keep reloading because they kept getting themselves killed. I finally just let them die each battle, and save the health potions for me and Alistair.

Right now, I'm in Lothering(sp). I just got Leliana, and I'm on my way to do all the in-town quests from the Chanter's Board for some much needed XP. Hooray for scalping bandits!

 

The merchant outside sells a Wine bottle, you might wanna save that for Wynne. You can pickpocket him for a nice crossbow. Remember Lothering gets destroyed if you finish any of the treaty quests or if you save Redcliffe/start the sacred urn quest, so you might wanna finish all the quests first.
The merchant inside the tavern sells cheaper items along with a nice amulet that lowers hostility for one sovereign, iirc. Finally buy what you think you need from Bodahn's stock the first time you meet him in camp. He will restock the next time you meet him.

 

Sweet! Thanks for the pickpocket info! I don't think I stole anything from anyone in Lothering last time.

 

I think the best use of the guards is to give them bows and let them stand away from the action. They can actually be pretty effective in this role. They never got killed when I used them like this.

 

Alright, I'm done with Lothering. I just got my first specialization, so my Elven Mage is now an Arcane Warrior. Question is, where should I go next. I want the Spellweaver sword a.s.a.p. along with Wade's Superior Dragonbone Armor. IIRC, those are both gained from the Urn of Sacred ashes quest...but I'd rather not have to do Redcliffe first. Should I get Wynne first...just to have a healer on hand?

@Rags - How did you do the Urn quest before Redcliffe?

Go to Denerim and speak with Brother Genitivi's apprentice to get the Urn of Sacred Ashes Quest

This might be pretty tough to tackle if you've only just finished Lothering, but I'm sure it's doable.

 

I'd really suggest finishing at least one of the treaties first. The Circle of Magi gives you the best rewards, but any will do. Definitely not Orzammar.
