Yes. I just got off a very long and hard 12 hour shift.... So my current logic is:
Chicago government = idiots. Obama is from Chicago, therefore...Obama = idiot.

I still don't understand why Americans are always arguing about guns, whereas gun control never makes the news in England and New Zealand.

 

We prefer to complain about the weather, and holding the government responsible for that is just silly

Because you've accepted that you can't own guns. We haven't. Instead, you complain about things like the London Congestion Charge* (if you live or work around London), or probably the way the government messed up your health care*, or taxes* (a perenneal favorite).

*These are all things I've heard actual brits actually complain about.

 

Win? Yes, your "prize" is the mail. If you are lucky, it might be a ticket to Chicago - where you can at least buy booze without having to drive to the next state.

Because of the amount of gun violence and crime. It's difficult to balance individual rights against public safety. This is a country where individuals actually brought guns to townhall meetings about health care.

 

I wouldn't say the government 'messed up our healthcare' at all, when you consider that there is free healthcare for all. The last time I checked Americans had to pay for medical insurance, and wherever possible the insurance companies get out of paying!

 

LOL, free healthcare? Really? The health workers in your country don't work for a wage? Resources just magically appear out of thin air?

 

Yeah, that's if you have your insurance directly through the insurance company. If it is through your employer, they will usually be pretty good about paying; they just pass the cost back to your employer. But if they have to pay you directly? They will find a way to screw you pretty hard.

 

Everyone pays tax, from which the NHS is funded... but if anything was to happen to me, I know I will receive healthcare without having to dip into my own pockets or worry about the many thousand dollar fees. Hence the actual care is free. I would HATE having to pay for medical insurance just to give myself some peace of mind, I find the very idea horrendous.

 

Barmy - imagine what England would be like if all the chavs were packing heat. That'd show the government a thing or two.

Half of them would end up injuring themselves and the other half would pose with it for three hours a day until they got bored and went back to tinkering with obscure modifications to the crappy dying car that looks more ridiculous than the fake gold they insist on plastering over anything that looks like it needs a shred of class obliterating from it.

 

Oh jesus yeah... God forbid they actually understood the meaning of '20%'... cheap cider would be down to 1% before they knew what 'VAT' even meant!

 

Mordea - Well, I'm sure you understood that Barmy was commenting that the cost of health care is distributed among the entire population of his country (and I don't mean to speak for Barmy, since he can do so well enough for himself). Obviously you disagree with that notion, and that is certainly understood as well. Nevertheless, that is how real insurance is supposed to work. The cost is distributed among the policy holders. So why pay the middle man an extra 30 percent that is completely unnecessary in the process?

 

Wait, what? How on earth did you get that from me simply observing that a service is obviously *not* free if you are paying for it? Do you ever read what I post before responding?

I have heard it first hand from a real live elderly brit (who was quite unhappy with being put on a waiting list for 25 years). How common the complaint is, I don't know, I just know that it exists.
