I don't like the stark temperature changes A/C puts me through. Like in department stores. Or on the ICE train for instance, where the AC in the summer is always too cold. You're travelling in great heat - but on the train you need a jacket. Silly. Also, all that moving air dries the eyes, which sucks when you work at a screen all day.

    Did i mention mosquitoes?

Less grateful bash topic but still fun this time of year.

! Just remembered this interesting fact i've seen a while back (when i had the patience to watch a whole 45min discovery channel documentary). Human size. I've been thought in history classes that agriculture was a definite step upwards in evolution, but judging by the size of our ancestors, we were doing far better then than until 200 odd years ago. They were far bigger (though a bit smaller than we are now), probably feasting happily off those fat mammoths. Then they died out and we went to scrubbing wheat and such. Though i suppose concentrated population (rivers - babylon, egypt,...) wouldn't have happened without us switching to farming food and is very very doubtful we'd be in such a superior position right now without those.
Still think i'd prefer munching on mammoth bones in huge glacial caves with roaring fires and smelly furs all around :D

    I'm alive!

The party was awesome...the only downside to it was this overly assertive chick from Texas who clearly wanted to make some fireworks of her own. Problem is, she looked like a man, talked like a (redneck) man, drank like a man, belched like a man, and looked like she *ate* a man...

Ladies please, it's cool and all if you want to drink with us, but don't act like us. :nono:

As I was saying, emotional deeply rooted aversion... :shake:

Moving at 130+ km/h is unnatural too but I kinda doubt you ride around on horseback still. :p

As for noisy, uh... yea, 15 year old or industrial sized units tend to be. Today, you can get practically silent ones, so that's another poor excuse. Not to mention you don't need to run AC 24/7.

The eyes one I'll give you, but as long as you don't point the air flow straight at your head and turn the AC off every now and then it's not an issue.

There's environmentally acceptable gas now going into most units, so that's another non-argument.

As for building, I'm not quite sure what you mean. None of the traditionally built European buildings can withstand heat like this and remain cool inside for more than a day or two. Even cool cellars would heat up if you lived in them.

You might be surprised to learn about this useful invention:

    :p

You're not buying it for one year, silly. How about £30 over 10 year period? Not to mention that you can get portable units for much less than that.

But granted, moaning about the heat is still infinitely cheaper than actually doing something about it. :D

Playing Two Worlds, a kind of poor man's Oblivion. For a game that costed $7, it's pretty damned good.

The ideal year-round temperature indoors is 72°F (~22°C). When I'm sleeping, I like it a little cooler...between 68°-70° is perfect.

Right now, it's a perfect day outside. It's 85° and the sky is completely clear.

You Brits always amaze me when it comes to things like this. Firstly, £300 for portable or window mount AC unit isn't half bad. For a central HVAC system, you're looking at $3,000 for a basic system in a small home...to $10,000+ for a well rounded system in the medium-large home. I can't understand why people continue to repair/upgrade their boiler systems...seriously, welcome to the 21st century.

I've been trying to get my dad to consider replacing the current system that's entirely too weak for this house (even before he built the room downstairs). I want a humidifier/dehumidifier with UV lamps, a HEPA filter, and at least two different climate zones. The loose estimate given to me based on # of rooms and total sq. footage was $8,000 to $8,750. :bad: My dad is going to have to shell out some serious cash sooner or later since this house is pushing 15 years old now, and since this was a model home, it's shocking that the HVAC unit is still working. (Everything that this house is made of was the cheapest crap on the market at that time.) :toofar:

How can it be a perfect day when it's not the ideal temperature? :) Or is 72° only ideal indoors and 85° is ideal outdoors?

Maybe he meant it was a perfect day to stay indoors, where the temperature is ideal. :)

Kit: UV lamps are unnecessary and just waste energy, a dehumidifier is also not needed in a properly vented system (the A/C works just fine to take out moisture and you need a humidifier in the winter). Dual zone is an expensive alternative to adjusting vents. You're spending a few extra thousand dollars on meaningless accessories -- besides, an A/C should last 20-30 years.

People keep boiler systems because they are much more efficient.

Read my post again carefully. To answer your 2nd question....yes.

Nah...that only happens during the winter when it's well below freezing, and a few days during the summer when it's over 105°F. :nolike:

In other news, I've got mi gato for the rest of my weekend (that's Sunday through Wednesday this week). :D

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds later... ----------

Firstly, UV lamps kill and backteria that might grow in the humidifier resivior.

Secondly, IIRC, a humidifier/dehumidifier is a single unit. I may be wrong, but again...IIRC, if you want one, you get the other no matter what.

Thirdly, my dad refuses to think in such ways. If *he* is uncomfortable, then he will adjust the thermostat to his liking, regardless of whether or not the rest of the house is freezing cold/boiling hot. In the winter, he turns the heater down to 50° because his room is nice and warm (the sun hits that side of the house and warms it up), but the rest of the house it bone-chilling cold. :nolike: Same thing goes for the summer, he turns the AC off when he's comfortable...and the house quickly heats up to 80°-90°. It's at that point when my mom yells at him to turn it back on. :toofar: When he goes to bed, he turns it off...but when the outside temp doesn't drop below 80° at night, things heat up quick, so I turn it back on before I go to bed...and about 30 minutes later, I hear him sneak out of his room and turn the system back off. :flaming:
This house *needs* multi-zone climate control.
I asked him why he’s got to be so cheap like that…and he said, “Because it’s my nature.” [IMG] I get that the old fart (he’s 70) was raised during the end of the Great Depression….but FFS, welcome to the 21st F***ing Century!

And lastly, a *well made* HVAC unit should last for 20-30 years. The system we have is not well made. It’s a cheap piece of crap installed by the worst homebuilder in Utah…we found that out a few years after we moved here. :grr: My dad’s already had to Jerry-rig it several times to keep it running. :nono:

T2 is right. UV light has a rather lousy penetration capability in most mediums. Could be useful for surfaces, thin water films and short distances. Depends on the size/type of the thing, but it's really an overkill/needless for most everyday settings. There will still be bacteria everywhere except in the reservoir, or they'll keep thriving in there regardless, if the exposure is set wrong.

Took the 1st draft of the graduation paper to my mentor. Stressful experience. Could be worse (he didn't read it in detail yet :p ) but stressful, stressful.

    *looks for ice cream*
