Mapping Stereotypes - Europe

An interesting view of Europe according to the stereotypes held by the US, France, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Gays. I don't think it's a study, just what the maker thought up. It's quite good. Personal highlights included Britain's "Semi-United Kingdom" and their view of the "Evil Federated Empire of Europe." The US sees the Eastern Bloc as the "Buffer Zone" between the "Commies" and western Europe. Italy's view of itself stops half way down, at which stage "Ethiopia" and "Somalia" appear. I'm particularly tickled by France's view of Turkey - "Definitely not Europeans."

 

Seems pretty accurate to me !

 

I don't think the French identify Ireland with Catholicism.

The "hairy" bit is misplaced (should be in Portugal according to the stereotype here) and the "best friends" thing is incredibly ironic as most of us share feelings ranging from mistrust to blatant dislike towards our German neighbours (going with silly stereotypes here of course).

However, the map is about the perception of someone else, not what is actually true of your country

 

Those maps are fricking hilarious. I'd like to see one for the US, with californians, new englanders, midwestern farmers, and other such groups labelling the country.

 

My point exactly. I know a bit about French prejudice and the stereotyped view of the world and I get that part.

Thus my remark that "catholics" for Ireland doesn't make much sense from a French vantage point. The French are culturally Catholic so they don't establish this sort of distinction about the Irish, I guess most people here would think about Celtic stuff instead when somebody would mention Ireland -most people here have a hard time grasping the difference between England, Scotland and Wales not to mention Ireland. Young generations probably think about Irish pubs, Guinness and St Patrick's Day.

Likewise our vision of America is distorted by the movies and soaps.

I did warn that it was just the maker's thoughts, he's a Bulgarian. There are some strange ones. The Italian's "Rugby" view of us is the one that's discussed over here. It's certainly getting popular but it'd still only be the fourth most popular sport. And I doubt that many Italians care enough about it to think of it.
