He lives in Canada. Maybe they have more rich people there. There is no good reason to cut the tax rate for the rich in the US, as DMC's article correctly states - Very good article, btw.

    But LKD said this:

Well, the rich have most of the wealth in the US, so it makes sense that they would pay a large portion of the taxes. The people who really get screwed are those in the upper middle-class. They don't have enough wealth to weasle out of paying (they are not really "rich"), and their rates are really very unfair. Many of them have to scramble for deductions, or pay far more than their share.

The tax system is unfair for whichever "class" you and I happen to be in, and is a free-ride for every other "class".

Or maybe they have no poor people. Apologies to LKD for my mistake.

We've got tons of poor people here. Some of them are poor because they are disabled. In such cases I have no problems with my tax dollars going to give them a reasonable standard of living. That's what a decent society should do.

Some of them are poor because they are 'underprivileged'. But Canada is chock full of social programs, funded by tax dollars, designed to aid this particular subset of the poor. I don't hold with someone using this excuse for decades on end. There's just too much opportunity here for that to fly with old LKD.

Which brings me to the third category of poor people. Lazy, parasitic pieces of <snip> who freeload off our social assistance without ever making an effort to improve their lot. Net takers by choice, not by necessity. These are the non-taxpaying pieces of <snip> who deserve to die screaming for their selfish, government sponsered theft from decent hardworking people. I despise these slothful pieces of trash with every fibre of my being.

Now there's also a class of rich people who somehow manage to get money from the government despite the fact that they don't really need it, and they weasel out of paying much back to the society that suckles them. They are net takers by choise as well, and conniving criminals to boot. People like the corporate fat cats mentioned by Chandos earlier in the thread. They too deserve brutal, painful punishment.

Which isn't to say that all of the rich should suffer. If they obtained their wealth honestly, I don't believe that people should be punished for mere success. Punishing, brutal taxes on the rich are no more fair than such taxes on the poor.
