There's nothing wrong with marijuana. The worst thing about it is that you have to mix it when tobacco to get it to light/smoke. It's only illegal because it's untaxed. I'd say both alcohol and tobacco are more harmful and dangerous substances, but they're OK because they're taxed. They should legalise marijuana. It's not exactly a hardcore drug it is. Legalise and tax the hell out of it.

A woman who is under the influence while having sex can claim that she was raped. In some countries, according to law, she might just have a case!

It's a good thing then that there are still countries in this world who do the right thing and hold that woman to her responsibility by stoning that filthy *****.

    More on topic....

I've known a lot of people who smoke pot regularly. Most have chosen occupations where such use is not an issue -- and I have no problems with that. I really take exception to the people in positions where the use of pot (or drugs or alcohol) could have an extremely adverse affect on those around them; and those users I would call losers.

But that's true of abuse of any substance; alcohol being an even more damaging one to those around them. No?

Also, only losers do cocaine, right?

Oh, dear God, my innocence is shattered. I spent my youth lusting after an addict.

Mind you, I always thought she looked a little stoned while lying there sprawled over Jabba -- speaking of which, you'd think he would have used some of the drugs that were obviously available* to keep his thralls under control. She was obviously on PCP or some sort of performance enhancing drug when she strangled him with his comm cable.

Is no one innocent? PeeWee Herman choking the chicken in a kinky theatre, Stephen King high as a kite when writing IT, CNN hiring perverts like Spitzer . . . all is lost. The world is a horrible corrupt place. The only solution is to join them. Disciple, if you're reading this, roll out the hideaway. LKD is on his way to Quebec so you can teach him the joy of fog. I'll bring plenty of money.

*There was a bong-like device, IIRC.

Of course she could strangle him -- she had the force as well and was able to channel the dark side due to her emotional outburst.

Alcohol has been around for a long time. I mean, a really long time. So have laws. While cars (for the example of drunk driving) may be relatively new, people have also been doing stupid and damaging things or other natures (especially fighting) while drunk for another really long time.

What I'm trying to say is that it's had a while to be sorted out.

i might be alone in this one, but i can't see why any drugs are illegal.
If drug abuse was treated as more of a social problem than a criminal offence i think it would be a lot easier to help them get well. you could also do a screening to make sure that under aged kids didn't get any(very similar to the alcohol rules).

a lot of gangs, whose primary income (i highly suspect!) is coming from the drug trade would have to find new ways of making money, this may also be the case for larger criminal organisation.

a lot of arrests would simply not happen, a lot of jail cells and police work hours will be used for "serious"(from lacking knowledge of a better word) crimes, not essentially victimless crimes, parting maybe yourself.

as a side note, not all drug users are loser, this is a quote from the wiki page of Paul Erdos:

"After 1971 he also took amphetamines, despite the concern of his friends, one of whom (Ron Graham) bet him $500 that he could not stop taking the drug for a month.[10] Erdős won the bet, but complained during his abstinence that mathematics had been set back by a month: "Before, when I looked at a piece of blank paper my mind was filled with ideas. Now all I see is a blank piece of paper." After he won the bet, he promptly resumed his amphetamine habit."

All drugs, in proper doses, have some useful effect. The problem is that people are never happy with the limited effects of 'proper doses', so they get drunk, instead of just having a healthy amount of alcohol, or high 'purity' cocaine, instead of just chewing on the leaves. Thus, we get meth addicts that look 60 when they're 25, raging alcoholics that murder their families, etc.

Honestly, though, I don't know that the social solution to drug use would work any better than the legal one. The reason is that it's not just the addicts that need help. It's much of society.

I feel I can adequately represent a fairly heavy smoker here. Used to not smoke hardly any weed, until about six months ago. When you are unused to the effects (effectively a lightweight) it is much more potent and really prevents you from being too productive. However, after very few uses you learn how to handle it and it's not too much different from being sober.

I have smoked nearly everyday for the last few months, occasionally taking a week or more off in order to lower my tolerance again. If I can't afford the drug I won't buy it. I don't NEED it in any way, so it's not forcing me to do anything. Simply put I enjoy the subtle effects that it has on you quite a bit.

I might as well add that during this time I've generally spent more time being productive, and less time sitting around bored online (not a jab at SP of course). I go out and socialize even just a bit more, and enjoy tasks I normally don't. Lot's of pro's and con's, and to me if it works for you, then go for it. It's something too trivial to judge someone a loser over.

And besides my own personal contribution (which only matters if pot smokers aren't users) one of the more interesting things is how widespread the use and culture is. Plenty of people you wouldn't expect to toke up do just that, and it isn't a issue.

Find someway to regulate driving under the influence* and everything should be peachy. Alcohol impairs you more, and cigarette's are worse for you, that's all I tend to point at for legality.

*As for the influenced driving that would probably be a requirement to get any vote passed, but almost impossible to regulate. Marijuana stays in your system, there's no real good way of telling when you smoked it and if you're still intoxicated (that I know of). It should come down to if you are functional enough to pass a sobriety test you should be able to drive, but there are obvious complications there.

This is my main argument for legalising weed.

    Ex-user here, by the way.

To think I created this account when I was a 16 year old who did everything his Mormon parents wanted him to. Figured I respect them enough to live by their rules when living under them.

During high school (small place 120 students or so) the kids who were legitimate stoners always thought I was high just because I was such a happy dude.

Maybe I should add that my definition of stoner includes the caveat that not only are they heavy smokers, but they aren't productive at all. I hate people that just sit around high all day without anything else going on.

Another little anecdote that seems relevant happened today. Out of herb, okay, don't need it, don't really care. Then my roommate found a little bit laying around the apartment and it's just a nice little boost to the day. Smiles.

I'm not going to try and get people to use drugs ever, I'm glad there are people who care about their health enough not to rely on them. I just like to add that I judge people much less now that I have done a few (note: I'm not a big drug user, nicotine, alcohol, weed, and my one mushroom experience are the only controlled recreational drugs I've used). Used to kind of look down on smokers, until I started for a while (quit mostly a few months later, still enjoy the occasional one). You realize that there ARE reasons people become hooked on things and that it really can happen to any type of person.

Kind of babbling now, but it's good to come back to the board.

CiG - As a parent of three children, I can tell you that I would not want any of them to become users, nor would I want them to experiment. Yet, I will also say is that if they ever become users, I would much rather have them be able to purchase MJ at a legal medical clinc, under the care of medical professionals, rather than from some drug dealer on a side street in the dark. As I remarked before, the War on Drugs is a monument to the stupidity of big government intrusion into people's lives.

If I was a parent I'd probably treat it the same way I'd treat alcohol use in my kids. As long as they lived with me, until they graduate high school, I'd tried and prevent my kids from using any drugs. After that and they are self-supportive they can do whatever they want. Certainly wouldn't WANT them to rely on drugs or alcohol, but a bowl after work or school, or a couple beers won't hurt them. As long as moderation is involved it seems to be fine.

Even as a non-smoker I was for legality for a variety of issues. The hit to organized crime, the benefits of taxation, and dropping the war on drug budget out are all great reasons for legalization. A system such as Portugal's (just one example I know) would be great.

Also I want to note that my perception is a bit different here than many others due to a very rural upbringing. There's no danger when I purchase and the dealers I buy from are all long term friends who don't do any more serious drugs, or sell them. Plus the market for hard drugs in the area is pretty damn shallow. Definitely can see that if safety was an issue I'd be less accepting.

Unfortunately, the law does not treat it that way. I have to teach my children to respect the law, even if it doesn't make much sense sometimes. What they do once they are of age is up to them and they will still always be my children, regardless. But I hope to teach them well. :)
