I just thought sharing could prove interesting. :) Any language, any word, but please - add a definition for reasons of clarity. I'll start:

'Malus' - the antonym of 'bonus' (I am pretty disappointed I never figured it out myself, considering the four years of Latin and all ;) ).

Warsh -- to clean something, as in laundry or dishes.

I don't learn new words too often, but I'm fairly interested in etymology. So I sooner learn the etymology of words I already know, rather than learning new words themselves. Is this thread suitable for etymology as well, or do you want to keep this thread solely for new words people have learned?

For those who have not yet learned the word Etymology:
"Etymology is the study of the history of words, their origins, and how their form and meaning have changed over time."
    :D

Haha! Each time I talked about a malus during the few PnP RPG's I played, people asked me: "Do you mean a penalty?" :p

I love this thread, btw! :) Good opportunity for me to enhance my vocabulary. :thumb:

Master of Nuhn, I am glad to hear this - my intention was to learn some new ones, too. Haha! Well am I not a sneaky bastard. :D

consanguinity - the state of being related by blood (figured the meaning myself thanks to all the Latin, but looked it up to check) ;)

The new words I learn always tend to be in sign language :( I like learning different phrases in various languages though. Howver, my pronunciation is generally awful!

But I bet your northern accent is awesome! :D

lath - a thin strip of wood or metal (it is somewhat archaic, I would say, stole it from Feste)

The funniest thing about this thread will probably be the fact that I recognize lots of words, but never use them and the surprise that you people don't use certain words of which I thought they would actually be quite common! :D Like "lath". :p

I have a feeling that the thread will die pretty soon... Ah, let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed!:

Rapalje - Old Dutch word for a group of mischief-makers. (synonym to Dutch words as gajes, schorriemorrie, (ge)tuig, gespuis, Janhagel) It would translate to Riff-Raff and Scum.

I knew the word, but thought it refered to a single mischief-maker, like a Rascal or a Scalawag. (Schavuit, hondsvod or belhamel in Dutch)

    I remember the word :D

    It's not turnip :shake:

It's onverdroten which is Dutch and means persistent.

Intussen gaat het zoeken naar de verblijfplaats van de ontvoerders en de heer Herrema onverdroten voort.

Hah, the word 'huncwot' exists in Polish language, too, same meaning, slightly different pronunciation. It is of German origin, if I am not mistaken...?

jeremiëren - to lament or bemoan. The etymological origin is probably Jeremiah, the old testament prophet who apparently did a boo-hoo when Jerusalem was sacked.

Tried to pronounce 8people's word and almost bit my tongue off. Damn greek etymology! :D

Today's post is sponsored by the word 'pagliaccio' - Italian for 'clown' or 'a comedian'. Stole it from Leoncavallo ;).
