    Threads morph!

As I have said before, rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. It is morally reprehensible to ram responsibilities down someone's throat without allowing them the commensurate rights.

It is also unhealthy to focus on rights and neglect to tell people that there are also responsibilities that go with it.

If it was rammed down the throat, pregnancy wouldn't be a concern.

T2 -- my understanding was that the pill must be taken regularily at 24 hour intervals. In other words, say you decide to take the pill at 8am every day. What that means is that for full 99.99%(number made up) effectiveness, you have to take the pill between 7:45 and 8:15 every single frigging day. No 10am or 6am ingestions. That's what I meant -- I wasn't referring to a morning after type pill that is taken the next day.

    No MUGging!

LKD, I apologies for making such a rash assumption. A woman actually has a several hour envelope. One problem with the pill is it either works or it doesn't. A single brand (or method of manufacture) may be 99.3% effective -- that means for 0.7% of women taking that brand of pill it is completely uneffective. This is in contrast with most other forms of contraception which give failure rates of the product.

Personally, I believe both partners should have their say on the matter, especially if we are talking about a committed relationship. Marginalizing the potential father's role would be rampant misandry, to the point of dehumanizing the man.

Still, whether we agree or not, the final decision will be largely hers. Even if the father disagrees, the woman can induce a miscarriage or get a medical abortion. It would take another thread to look at it from an ethical perspective, of course.

I agree. As for the rest of your post - I was referring to teenagers of both genders. The male ones are not the only species capable of putting condoms on (sure, if the girl does it, the said condom probably will not be needed for more than ten seconds, but still... ;) ).

True that - I don't know any guy that would prefer to use a condom, as opposed to her being on the pill.

Exactly - I remember my first time, she never brought up using a condom, and I certainly wasn't going to be the one to suggest it.

I neearly choked to death on my sandwich when I read that. I'd rep you if I could man.

As an aside: Is that an alternative form of artificial insemination?

And that is largely not true. I'm sure you don't want to hear this now, LKD, but chances are she was hosing you even worse than you thought.

EDIT: Didn't see T2's post #26 before typing this /edit

While it is recommend that you take the pill around the same time every day, there is no magical 15 minute window. By around the same time they mean don't take it in the morning one day, and in the evening the next day.

In my life between two girlfriends and my wife (not simultaneously obviously), I have about seven years experience of women being on the pill, and none of those three stuck to a 15 minute rule. They just took it around the same time every day. For example, my wife usually took it around dinner time. Sometimes that was 5:30, sometimes 6:30, sometimes 7:30. I didn't get her pregnant until after she stopped taking the pill, and I never got any of my previous girlfriends pregnant when they were on the pill.

Sorry to break it to you, but if you got your ex knocked up, chances are she was skipping the pill on at least a somewhat regular basis (especially considering the last few pills in a packet that are a different color don't contain any hormone, so you can usually skip those), or you were just really unlucky in that your ex was one of the few women who the pill doesn't work for. If I were a betting man, I'd lay odds on the former.

Well, not to brag or anything, but most real men do not suffer from that, or at least gain some control by the time they're 18.

Rune - if he's a teenager, that's a pretty minor problem, as he's ready to go again pretty much before you blink. If we're talking a middle-aged guy then it's certainly a disaster, as he's out of luck for a significantly longer time . . .

One thing that I think it is missing from the debate is just how god awful condoms are to use. Sure they protect against just about everything but they also remove most of the enjoyment from the penetration part of sex. Sex with a condom is possibly mildly preferable over masturbation to internet porn if the woman is really really hot and you really really like her. Getting it on is a major turn off, just that is often enough for me to lose any urge and start thinking about what is on TV or if someone replied to my post here on SP and if you do manage to get it on without the little guy going on strike due to suffocation risks it is like humping a, well a condom.

I think a lot of young men have been brought up good and know that they should use a condom and have been taught how awesome they are and get a bitter realization with just how detrimental to the enjoyment of sex they are.

This is one of the many reasons why I have never really fancied the concept of one night stands and why one of the requirements for a girlfriend is that she is on some kind of contraception.

Oh and as for the responsibility part, of course it is both parties and equally.

I'm a little confused about the results of the study, actually. I originally read it to mean not using any contraception at all. However, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Does it mean that boys are safe during their first time and then go around having sex with virgins and insisting upon not using condoms? I guess that could be it if on a whole the young male population has more sex with different females than young females have with different males.

Or is the study simply that women take the pill less than men use condoms? That would hardly be a fair sample if the woman insisted upon condom use.

The study is first time sex with a partner of any age, I'm assuming. Hmm, I wish the quote from mordea had more detail.

@Rune/Aldeth, I guess that all depends on the guy and the gal. ~.^ I know there are a growing number of single-fathers. (The guy doesn't have to worry about carrying the baby; true; but he may place upon himself the burden of responsibility to care for the child. If he doesn't, you may be correct in that women should care more about contraception than men. In my personal experience, I've almost always worried more about birth control than my partner.)

Why so sexist? If your daughters choose to allow a guy to pound them, then that is *their* fault. Maybe you should threaten your daughters with the rifle?

Time to repeat our daily mantra. After me, folks: "Always the man's fault. Always the man's fault."

A friend of mine is studying to be a health practitioner. One of their tutorials focused around the use of the oral contraceptive pill. I kid you not, he stated that it was one of the most active tutorials ever, as all the girls in the class were asking how/when to use the pill/what to do if they missed x dose/etc., while the boys sat around with a shocked expression on their faces.

    He came to two conclusions:

    1. The oral contraceptive pill regimen can be complicated and confusing.

    2. A lot of women on the oral contraceptive probably *aren't* taking it as they are meant to be taking it, through no malicious intent.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 1 minutes and 10 seconds later... ----------

You're sexist if you shoot the guy for your daughters' actions. What ever happened to teaching your kids responsibility?

Oh sorry, silly me. Responsibility is only for men! :D
