I have a question regarding how damage is calculated.

Elemental damage, i.e. 2d6 + 10% chance for 2d10 frost damage does NOT get multiplied when you score a crit. is this correct? And is this also true for other additional damage such as a weapon that deals +3d6 slashing, +2d6 vs. evil, or +2 damage vs. goblins?

Also, slings do get STR bonus to damage, don't they? because when I look at the damage potential in the character information screen, it doesn't reflect that.

None of the extra damages you listed gets multiplied by crits. Only the generic +damage does. You can get +damage from buffs (Aid, Emotion: Hope, Prayer, Chant, Holy Power), feats (specialization), items (gauntlets of weapon specialization), Bard song (1st level) and from the Priest of Talos' special buff.

Slings do get STR bonus eventhough it doesn't reflect that on the lying character screen. For characters with maxed STR and DEX, you can't really get anything better than a sling for damage dealing early on, when the +1 extra attack via Rapid Shot really owns.

Well, the difference between 1d10+3 +3d6 on 18-20 and 1d10+3d6+3 is 20.2 average damage to 21.85. 8% increase at best. Adding to that base in the form of STR/whatever only decreases that percentage. So against most enemies there's little difference.

Where it hurts is against damage reduction because (I'm 99.99% sure) they're treated separately.

But yeah, IIRC, you're right -- it's not an impressive sword by the point where you can first pick it up. If you don't have the Ease-of-use mod bugfixes it doesn't even give you the +3 attack. And if you don't have the Ease-of-use "Improved Bastard Swords" mod installed
there's no reason to specialize in bastard swords at all as they're all crap.
(...no reason for us metagaming powergamers at least. A RP'er can of course see things differently.)

With the Improved Bastard Swords package installed the BSoH is 4d10+3 :D

The weapons I used which did extra damage (greataxe+5 with +2d6 slashing and the 2-handed throwing axe buyable in Kuldahar) did the extra damage without reduction even when the main damage was reduced due to DR.
