Did The Internet Forget That Automatic Audio Is Aggravating?

And I don't even mean ads. Today I clicked on a link called "Real Life Weekend at Bernie's" via Google News that looked intriguing and carried the ABC News byline (and did not carry any [video] tags, incidentally) and was immediately bombarded by some reporter screaming "IN A REAL-LIFE WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S ..." from my PC's speakers. I killed the window in short order, but not before everyone in the office looked up in irritation at my reckless intrusion and understood very fundamentally that I was goofing off.

I firmly believe that NO link should lead you to a video - particularly one with audio - unless it explicitly says that's what it's going to do. Being hit with unwanted video is bad enough, but at least it doesn't advertise to everyone else within a 700 meter radius what you're up to like audio does. The only solution to avoid this is to turn your speakers off or down, but that itself looks suspicious. Your coworkers will assume that you're surfing for porn behind the facade of the back of your monitor and your 'serious business' face if you're always adjusting volume.

Those who create stealth video links should be shot in the public square.

    LMAO... busted!

I sit next to a very nosy co-worker who constantly has to see what others are doing. She is unprofessional. But, I also jump on SP throughout the day, so she gets on my least nerve. I keep my volume off unless I'm doing training for work that requires head phones. Good thing you weren't on a porn site... load moaning would of turned a few heads. Or some high-pitched squealing from a "Love you long-time" girl would of been pretty funny...:D

It's pretty sad when people don't even recognize the most obvious solution - don't surf the internet at work. ;)

I just keep the volume turned down.

I always have my volume off. No one has ever thought it suspicious at work.

Do they think it's suspicious when your hands are always out of sight beneath your desk?

    :p

That's only for you not-so-well endowed fellas, the rest of us don't need to put our hands under the desk...;)

Blades, does your nosy coworker wonder what in hell SP is? I'll bet she gossips with others about you and "that blue and purple website he's always at." ;)

The internet does alot of annoying stuff, especially when it comes to advertising, my pet peeve being full screen popups which have the close button in some tiny font placed in an obscure location.

You could try using noscript, it's a nice add-on once you get it settled but a pain for the first two weeks or so.

I'm also not a big fan of the websites that ask "Are you sure you want to leave this page". I can't tell you how many of those I've sent to Tal to remove from this site. Although, I haven't sent him one in a bit as I've been lazy and just living with the annoyance :(
