Well, even Mormons aren't that dogmatic. What if tech were developed that let the eggs be incubated in cocoon type things, like Brave New World? Would the Church then be willing to pay for the upkeep of those kids? Hmm.

Aldeth, thanks for the explanation. I still don't agree with the church stance on this, but at least I think I now know how they come to the conclusions they do.

Considering the hard stance on the holiness of life already at conception, I'd like to know how that meshes with the cold, harsh realities of life and the problem of overpopulation already as it is. So the point is that ANY life is worth keeping, no matter whether the resources to upkeep it on any sort of a humane level are there or not?

I actually disagree with Tal here a bit. I'd say NOT exactly. Only if you are Catholic. You see if you're NOT Catholic, you eternal soul is likely damned to hell for all eternity anyway, so heaping one more sin on top of the countless that you'll likely accumulate anyway, is of lesser concern. It's like you can be damned to hell for two eternities. It's as pointless as sentencing someone to multiple life terms in prison.

Exactly. And in the case of a human life any form of 'but it's so small' is not an excuse.

But IVF would already be inconsistent with Catholic ethics even without destroying any eggs. Insemination other than through intercourse violates it, not as gravely as abortion but still:

Poke me if you need it translated into everyday English.

Basically, one can't expect to be able to work in a religious school and choose to lead a 'lifestyle' inconsistent with the morality professed by that religion.
