From the tool tip it seems that way since my gear only allows me to go up to 50% (by my count it should be 65%) What if you chug a potion?

There's no resistance cap that I'm aware of, and there are ways to bring your magic resistance to 100% or higher. It won't work against all magic types though (the game engine and D&D magic in general is weird that way). And magic resistance won't protect your from non-magical effects, like the winged buffet of a dragon or the paralyzing attacks of ghouls.

Hmmmm, it seems like the tool tip will not show anymore then 50%. Does anyone know for sure? Is this just a glitch?

My bad. Did not realize there is Magic Resistance and Mage Damage Resistance.

Depends on the items and character; some items only give a set magic resistance, other add magic resistance. You need to look closely at the item description (even so, some descriptions are wrong). For example, the Carsomyr sword sets magic resistance at 50% without a fix or mod.

You can definitely go above 100 in resists. In an earlier unpatched version of the game if I had over 100% fire resist, fire would actually me my character! :D

With a good combination of items you can easily max out most elemental resistances (which will indeed heal you if you're hit by that kind of elemental resistance).

Magical resistance is no different. If you take a Monk through ToB, you can get him or her up to 118 MR. That's 78 native Monk MR, +5 for the Machine of Lum the Mad, +5 from the Deck of Many Things, +10 for the selfishness hell trial, +10 from the Amulet of Seldarine and another +10 from the Ring of Gaxx.

If your MR seems to cap out at 50%, then probably you're carrying Carsomyr. Or at least that's an item that sets your MR to 50%, as T2B already mentioned.

I think the cap for MR is over 150% but it has been a while since I tried to do that...unlike elemental which is "only" 127% (why that number I don't know). This is going by memory my exact numbers may be off.

Carsomyr is strange because it does set to 50% every time you equip it (and every time you load your game while wielding it) however you can add to it but it requires you to put those items on to the character after you equip the sword. For instance I had Keldorn at 100% MR by equipping the sword first followed by the ring of gax, cloak of Balduran, amulet of 10% MR, and Enkidus plate(?). The crappy part is that you need to "reset" the MR every time you load your game. Annoying.

Numbers that are powers of two or one less than a power of two are often found in computer programs due to the binary nature of computers.
127 is one less than 2^7, which is the largest possible signed 8-bit integer (the 8th bit indicates if the number is positive or negative for a range of +/-127).
    Other commonly seen limits are 255 (largest 8-bit unsigned integer), 32767 (largest signed 16-bit integer) 65535 (largest unsigned 16-bit integer), 16777215 (2^24-1, 24-bits), 2147483647 (2^31-1, 32-bits) and 4294967296 (2^32-1, 32 bits).

Those numbers appear very often in computer programs, especially when you try to cheat or find limits for values. It has to do with the fact that they are the most common sizes for variables in most languages on most platforms. Specifically 8-bits (1byte), 16-bits (2 bytes) 24-bits (3 bytes) and 32-bits (4 bytes).

I'm sure today 64-bits and even 128-bits is just as common in this age of 64-bit processors. Just calculate (2^bits)-1 to get those numbers and you can find what those large numbers are.

Because of zero, the range is always one larger in the negative direction than in the positive direction for two's complement representations. I.e. the range for a signed 8-bit integer in two's complement is [-128,127].

You can also use NearInfinity on Carsomyr so that it adds 50% MR instead of setting it at 50% MR. This is what I used to do.

But nowadays, I use the Item Upgrade Mod. This might be easier for the uninitiated than using NearInfinity.

There is also a file in the Baldurash fix pack or tweak pack that does the same thing. Little bitty file that just sits nicely in the override folder (or whatever the folder is called).
