What does the monk empty body do?

what does the monk ability empty body do? Enter an etherial state? What does it mean?

I believe it means that the monk has a 50% chance to avoid being hit (he becomes ethereal and phases out), but also has a 25% chance that his attacks will phase out also.

 

This sounds like the "Blink" spell.

 

Okay, I just looked this up in my old 3.0 Player's Handbook. It allows the monk (and some of his allies) to enter the ethereal plane. This effectively makes him/her invisible and unable to be attacked by beings in the prime material plane, except by force effects such as magic missile and wall of force. It also allows him to walk through solid objects such as doors and walls, and reduces movement speed by 50%.

I really can't say how closely IWD2 followed the PnP version of the ability. For some reason, I had thought it had mirrored the blink affect. Maybe not.

I don't have any high level monks to test with.

 

Sounds a lot like the special ("Inner Sanctum"?) mode of the Battle Squares room in ice temple. If the monk can do that multiple times a day, that would actually be really nifty. However, a quick test indicates that "Empty Body" is really just the Blink spell. It even says "...blinks out of existence and avoids an attack", and unlike Inner Sanctum mode it only works sometimes. 50% seems about right from my test, which also matches Blink.

 

That matches my original recollection, but it's probably been a good 6 - 7 years since I last played a monk in IWD2, so that recollection was really hanging on by a thread.
