So I'm currently playing as a Mage/Thief multi-class. I've played this set-up before, but never made it very far in the game because I got bored. I'm currently running around doing various quests, and I'm wondering, since I can only choose one or the other (without modding the game), which one should I choose? Is the Thief one worth being forced to constantly return to run things? Or should I stick with the Mage one for the (few) items that the apprentices make?

I prefer the mage stronghold. It is way more interesting, and it doesn't feel like having an office job where you have to return regularly in order to report to your boss or give instructions to your underlings.

Agree though I think that if money is a motivation I think the thief is the way to go but honestly since when is money any issue in this game in the long run?

My vote is Mage stronghold personally.

I'd go with the mage stronghold, more interesting and more things (at least in my mind when I was doing some of my games) that you can do with it.

If you want to knock out the shadow thieves it can be more interesting to take the thief stronghold and imagine yourself starting a rival guild.

I know someone may point out Bodhi won't take you if you are a thief but human thieves have an easy way around this by dual-classing before you join her. (Then leveling up enough to get your thief skills back after joining her.)

Oh, and if you want more money from the thieves' guild just charm the guy you are supposed to report (and give tribute to) to from the Shadow Thieves and take him upstairs or outside and kill him. As long as your thief underlings don't see you attack him they don't care.

While charmed, if he won't move with your party have him attack a party member just before you change locations.
