    Hey people, I'm back again...

@ Vorona, well that sucks, but what exactly are syllabi ? I'm guessing it has something to do with syllables, but that's kinda vague.

I'm that 14 years old who signed up eleven years ago to ask why my brand new Icewind Dale II game kept crashing -- turned out it was a faulty GPU, but that was, what ? three computers ago ? Anyway that smug, obnoxious teenager grew up into the smug, obnoxious "adult" you see here today

I always thought the fact that I'm one of the "old ones" here in SP was kinda funny, I'm just 24 after all.

You must've noticed that going away for long periods of time and coming back and going away again is kinda my thing.

It's sort of my thing, too. Probably this summer when I'm starting my next novel, I'll probably be hanging out a lot more at Forward Motion and a lot less here.

Syllabi is one of two accepted plural forms of syllabus, which is a Roman bastardization of a Greek word (I can't remember the Greek word), that meant something I no longer remember. Today, it is used mostly in colleges (though also, apparently, some charter schools). Usually, they tell students what the course is about and they have a class schedule, with weekly reading and important due dates.

What we've been doing, though, is kind of backwards: we're supposed to create a syllabus for the class we just taught, meaning that if we want to change things for next year (new teacher here, of COURSE I want to change things), we'll have to do it later.

And, as I said in an earlier post, we're supposed to write down all the specific state standards/benchmarks for each week, in addition to the reading and due dates of projects. That's what's taking so long: it took three hours to do that last time, and that was going rather fast and not putting as much thought into it as I would have liked. To do it well would take apparently around 90 hours (according to the guy whose syllabus we're supposed to emulate). Even he said it was crazy to do it now.

Oh right, well now I know. I honestly thought it was some sort of exercises related to syllable, y'know "how many syllables does the word presumptuous has" or something similar.

    Btw,

How can a cookie be right, when the cake is a lie?

Because a cookie is nothing like a cake ?

It may be a lie but people still talk a lot about it, making it somewhat "real", I mean the internet is littered with cake reference. Think of it as cold, technically cold is also a lie, it's simply an absence of heat, cold doesn't really exists by itself. It's the same thing really.

Maybe he does, but you can keep your koekje to yourself, you silly dutchman (yes, I had to look it up).

The Linguist that is me says:

A word or lexeme (as the cool kids* call it) is defined by its unique definition and usage in any given language regardless of its origin or the original meaning. So no, a cake is not a cookie. It's actually more complicated than that, but for the sake of this argument it's good enough.

    cookie =! cake.

*The cool kids would be us linguists, 'cause we're cool. it is known . I mean, we've got Ferdinand de Saussure and Noam Chomsky and you know de Saussure was the better linguist because of e=mc^2

excellence = mustache times coolness squared

A compound word with cake as its central semantic core and jaffa as its modifier ? That's what we call a univalent compound word.

    /smugness :p

Yes, I am very proud of myself

I agree. Saussure is much better than Chomsky. And his name is so much fun to say, although I suppose people who like chomping their language would prefer Chomsky's name.
