Oooh! I know exactly what you mean, Flix! When people cook for me, they treat me like 3 people and an hour later I pop open a bag of crisps while they're still hiccuping. (Hiccuping sounds odd. Is it correct English grammar?)

Hiccupping is the sudden, involuntary contraction of the diaphragm. Burping is the release of excess stomach gas through the mouth.

Bloody hell. Turns out I learned something on my degree...shame I have to be half way down a bottle of whiskey to remember it!

Hahaha! Yeah, there's a whole lot of wisdom in the darker corners of my brain that I usually only remember when I'm brave and drunk enough to search for it. :D

What I learned is that hiccup(p)ing is spelled with two P's.
Wait... no, it's not. There's a red line under that word. I learned nothing. Sorry.

Ha! Hicupping vs. hicuping. . . both are underlined for me. Which is it, really?

I got a cat today. I named her Iris!

    Neither. :D It's hiccuping. Double C, single P. :)

Cats are awesome! And I like Iris. :)

I don't have kids or plan to have them any time soon, but sometimes I'm discussing child names with fem friends (okay, usually GF's, but I don't have one atm). Girl names are way easier than boys and Iris always comes back.
Here Iris is pronounced different, I guess. EE-riss, iso EYE-riss.

So, one year max until Vorona finds out that there are no people who own cats. There are cats who own people. ;)

Yes. Precisely because you can't own them. :)

Dirty, smelly beasts. I'd much rather have a dog than a flea-bag cat! :nolike:

Heh, I've very rarely encountered any cats that'd smell - unlike most dogs, which really stink unless bathed every few days. Of course, most of their owners either get used to the stink or merrily ignore it. Cats are proverbially good at keeping themselves clean so I'm not sure where you got the idea that they're "dirty".

Exactly my thoughts, Tal. Ever smelled a dog in a hot, sweltering summerday? Yuch!

Hey, I said I got a cat, not that I owned one! She has definitely claimed my lap. The good news is that she's healthy, she uses the litterbox, and she eats and drinks. She loves catnip and it doesn't make her aggressive/scared like it did one of my parents' cats. Although I think she is still scared because her tail is still really huge and fluffy. But she purrs constantly, so . . . ?

I'll put pictures up in the cat group sometime once I've put my battery in my camera.

In other news, I also have a nest of purple finches on my balcony and they just hatched yesterday. So, I need to make sure Iris doesn't get onto the balcony (she's going to be an indoor cat anyway).

Seriously? You've never smelled how bad cats are?
One of the points on the tenancy agreements that I use is that the tenants are not allowed pets without my written consent. One woman had 2 cats and I had to have the whole place fumigated and two carpets replaced because the smell was so bad. I even had a workman refuse to go in the house because of it.

I've known a few people who've had cats and their houses absolutely reek!

And yes, dogs do smell but that's what hose pipes are for!

Are you talking about cat poop, Sil? That is pretty evil.

Humans smell pretty darn awful, too, if you let them pee all over your place and don't clean up.
I put my nose in a cat's fur every now and then and I smell nothing. (You don't need hose pipes for a healthy cat.) Most dogs however... No thanks.

Lol... I never smelled it because the only cats I've ever encountered were actually cared for. Obviously if you have a crazy cat lady that'll let her cats urinate and poop on the carpets the whole place is going to stink. But that's not the cats' fault - it's the owner's. Any animal (or human) not properly cared for in an apartment or a house is going to stink it up.

Btw, just hosing a dog down does almost nothing for the smell.

You're right. That is ridiculous! Some dog owners don't get used to the smell, can't ignore it either, yet somehow are able to deal with it. :p

I was sitting at a side walk café this evening, right near the point where 3 rivers come together*. I saw my parental home on one of the other sides and I was enjoying a "Hollandse Nieuwe" (Lit. Dutch New: brined, raw herring) and my favorite beer. I thought I heard myself singing. "Heaven. I'm in heaven. And my mouth is full so I can hardly speak..."

*I feel particularly good/at home near a river. I've been living near the busiest confluence of Europe for almost whole my life. (Canadian and American visitors could spend hours at that confluence. "There's so much to see here!")

I think we're all going to have to disagree. I've been in houses with dogs that are practically ignored and don't smell and houses with cats that are looked after and absolutely hum to high heaven! Some of you have found it the other way round

I still think they're disgusting animals though!
