This should help. I invite you to test the site yourself since it has several very nice editing tools that you can use to significantly improve the quality of your pics.

A few notes though. For IWD2:
    Large size portrait: 210 x 330 pixels
Small size portrait: 42 x 42 pixels (make sure you're not using inches or centimeters)
The site allows you to resize your pics so use these dimensions. Be sure to save your pics in *.bmp format. Small pics should have a name ending in "S" while large ones should have a name ending in "L". The names must not exceed 7 characters.

Handy site, but i'm pretty sure small portraits aren't squares. There's also m-size portraits.

from a mod, I can see the pixel formats are:
    210x330
    110x170
    39x60
There's probably some leeway with pixel numbers, but not much.

There are two free programs that can convert the images for you. irfanview is quite simple to use, but not very powerful. It will do the job for you quite easily and quite well. It's pretty good for doing a slideshow, and for converting an image between formats. It's editing capabilities are somewhat limited, but it can resize, rotate, and flip quite well.

GIMP is to Photoshop as Open Office/Libre Office is to Microsoft Office. It's more powerful but more complicated than Irfanview.

    http://www.gimp.org/

I have not played around with GIMP in over ten years, I can't offer much help. All my needs have been satisfied by Paint or Irfanview.

I just looked up an old thread, didn't I give you instructions on how to do this last year for Baldur's Gate II?

The same applies for IWD2, just use the IWD2 dimensions instead of the BG2 dimensions. It's not that hard with Irfanview.

YES! That's it! How did you find it? I tried a name look up but didn't see it. I must have missed it somehow. I have since redone my laptop and lost the info. Thank you SlickRCBD.

The images only need to be resized? Why not use mspaint?

I haven't attempted this with MSPaint since Windows 98, but when I tried to resize an image with it well over a decade ago, all it did was crop the image to the size specified. It didn't shrink and transform it.

Looking at the Windows XP version, it seems you can change it by a percentage, but Irfanview lets you tell it the exact dimensions you want it resized to without all the guesswork. You can also tell it the width or height and have it maintain the aspect ratio so the image isn't distorted.

I'll have to try it on the Windows 7 system since they changed calc between xp, vista, and 7, but somebody else is borrowing it at the moment and I'm using the old 1ghz XP system. They should be done in a few hours, as their sitting in the same room.

Yeah, distortion becomes an issue when you try shrinking images with standard software. I'm glad the online resizer remedies this.

I just realized I never explained how I found the post.
I simply used the site's advanced search engine to show me any posts to the D&D forums made by SlickRCBD mentioning irfanview in the message body.

In your case, you'd want to search for posts about resizing or converting images. You might even be able to use the subject line instead of having to search the body.

I just found this for Windows XP users, it looks like its even simpler than IrFanView, which I thought was pretty simple to use if you just choose the "resize/sample" option.

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe

I'm not sure if this "powertoy" will work with later versions of Windows. I don't see why it wouldn't, but it does say on the Microsoft page that it's designed only for XP. as I'm waiting for that machine to finish installing something that will need a reboot.

May be generally useful for other games too.
