My party entered the Forgotten Temple for the first time and I´m a bit confused.

Outside the temple the frightened good giant tells that bad priests have taken over the temple and killed the good priests and the giants.

However when I enter an acolyte stops me accusing me of the murder.

So is that the one last good priest standing right at the entrance that the bad priests missed to kill? While hardly believable if so I would feel bad with the only option to kill him. :o

Or is that a bad priest pretending that my party did the murder? If so I don´t get the reason for that if the temple has already been taken over and there´s noone there but evil priests and my party so why would he not just attack immediately?

Priests of Talona had come and gone after taking the Heartstone Gem.

The survivors were members of a fringe cult that was set up by a druid apprentice that left Kuldahar long ago.

Presumably the survivors went insane and paranoid after the incursion by the Talonites. It's the survivors you're fighting in the Temple.

So I have to essentially slaughter my way through the *victims* of the evil priests assault? My Paladin won´t like that :(

Is there any other way to get through the temple?

Nope. Think of it as self-defense. ;)

Btw, the IWD series have a reputation as being more dungeon crawl slash heavy and rather light in comparison on roleplaying as it were.

I would say that that is by design. Also thinking back in it I wonder if that is one reason why they used 1e FR gods rather than picking a time period that was actually used with the 2e rule set? Use 1e gods for a 1e style adventure?

They probably just thought it was cool. The setting is far enough removed, both physically and chronologically, that it's unlikely to clash with any existing lore (i.e. more creative freedom).

As for the paladins, I really hate the inflexible, black-and-white, to-the-letter, pompous, self-righteous, goody-two-shoes pricks they're expected to be played as. The world is all sorts of grey—They should be allowed to function in it. Killing a maddened victim is unfortunate, but it shouldn't phase a warrior of the faith on a righteous quest. There are far more important things to worry about besides the moral implications of defending yourself against someone who is beyond reason.

Killing *a* maddened victim is not what I would see as a problem. But when I understood Beren right then the evil priests have already left and *all* acolytes and giants left in the temple are neutrals who had suffered from the priests assault and now have all to die in the dozens as there is no other way :(
It´s really illogical that the one frightened giant leaves just at that time in terror when no longer any evil priests are present and that so many acolytes and giants are left alive...

To be fair, I don't actually remember this part at all. I haven't played IWD in ages. :shake:

Sounds like a good idea for a mod though. We could call it Path of the Righteous and fix such design errors, maybe further enhance a few encounters as well...

Just like a ranger can charm the wolf in the hut in Easthaven instead of having to kill it which I find is a nice alternative for animal-friendly characters like Rangers or Druids.

I don't remember that working for actually fulfilling the quest, merely letting you loot the warehouse without the wolf chasing you out.
I too haven't played in several years, but I could have sworn I tried that tactic and wound up having to kill the wolf anyways.

Does it actually let you fulfill the quest or just avoid killing the wolf?

I tried it yesterday using the "Charm Animal" special ability of my Cleric/Ranger and the wolf became friendly and left the shop. And the carver acknowledged that and I got the reward.
