Is there any item(s) a thief can wear to protect him/her from critical hits?

Ioun Stones. I'm not sure if they fixed this in the EE versions (you can test it with the Critical Strike HLA if you want, you must have a lot of saved games) but in the original game protection against crits worked on all head slot items.

Most ioun stones have no class restrictions, and is generally what you'd put on a thief, monk, bard or mage.

There's also the helmet Mask of King Strohm III that you assemble in Firkraag's dungeon that has no class restrictions, but will protect against critical hits. Or the Thieves' Hood that you can get on the third floor of the watcher's keep if you help one of the demon groups there, but not the other.

Most items you can put in there would also have protection against crits in its description, so I'm not sure that it would be a bug.

It's one of those bugs that we take for granted and that has more or less become a BG2 feature over the years. AFAIK all head slot items protect against crits, though I have no idea how a Ioun Stone could possibly do that D&D-wise.

I thought that, because it was in the item description, that it wouldn't be a bug, because it was intended that way. Unless some mod updated the descriptions to fit their effect.

But I don't know the D&D rules outside how it is implemented in the games, so it could be in violation of the rules.

No Helmet has an Effect like "Protection from Critical Hits", so the protection must in the item category, Headgear (7), itself.

All I do is wait until you get the HLA, use any item, and then have a thief wear a helm.

Other than the Mask of King Strohm every helm I've seen has "Protects against critical hits".

As for waiting for use any item that's one hell of a wait. I'd like something sooner :p

The Mask of King Strohm III also protects against crits, and I'm pretty sure it's in the item description (at least in vanilla BG2).

Sweet. I was going by what it says in eekeeper. It doesn't say it does like the other helms.
Yes it's from the BG2EE not the vanilla

Interesting. It does say it protects against crits in vanilla (or that could be a fix from a mod). I'm pretty sure Ishad Nha is correct in that the protection is inherent to the slot, rather than the item. Though of course they could've changed this too in the EE.

Unless they changed it in the EE, but they definitely do in vanilla BG.

This was fixed in the enhanced edition for all the ioun stones. checking the items in NearInfinity reveals the new flag "EE : Toggle critical hits" which is 1 for all the ioun stones.
The mask of king strohm III does not have this flag set though, so that is the one exception.

I meant what I saw when I examined the items in Near Infinity, there was no such Effect listed in the itm file for any helmet.

Sorry about that. I only use eekeeper so I foolishly assumed that's what you were using.

Shame they 'fixed' that, would be hard to get the protection from critical hits now for certain classes.

While thieves and mages are not front liners, and so it could be argued that they need it less anyway, the same does not go for a monk, which is already a bit of a fragile fighter, and is even more so without protection from critical hits.
