Why can't I pick a kit for a gnome? They specialize in illusionist but can't they choose a dif specialty?

Oh, pick a kit? Just pick a kit? Why don't you strap on your kit helmet and squeeze down into a kit cannon and fire off into kit land where kits grow on kitties?!

On a more serious note, you should be able to pick a kit. Just not a different multiclass kit, like X/Illusionist, since that's gnome-specific.

Gnome mages are restricted to the illusionist specialization, both single class and multiclass.
The downside for a single class mage gnome is that you don't get to pick any of the other specializations, but when you are going multiclass, gnomes are the only ones that can even get a specialization of illusionist - all other races that go multiclass will just be a regular mage/XX.
as far as single classes besides mage go, you should be able to pick a class just fine. if you go with being a pure thief gnome for example, the game should give you the option of being a swashbuckler or assassin.

So if you want to play a mage with a different specialization, you might want to pick a different race. another option would be to edit the character through EE keeper to get a secialization you'd normally be unable to obtain on a gnome mage.

Well, that's what i gathered from the initial post anyway.
The only reason i knew that even single class gnome mages get restricted to the illusionist specialization was because i recently tried rolling up an invoker gnome mage.

The loss of the Necromancy spells isn't too big of an issue, though there's a bunch of spells i do hate losing out on, like animate dead, horrid wilting and wail of the banshee; But i guess the bonuses to spell and wand save you get kind of offset that disadvantage.
Still, i find it kind of strange that none of the other diminutive races besides gnomes get access to arcane caster classes in the first place, and even gnomes are forced into the illusionist specialization.

Damn. I was hoping to make a gnome necro. Def out of the picture I see.
Another problem I have is that I can't get my gnomes to actually be illusionists??? I don't have that option at character creation. It just says "Mage" in game not "Illusionist"???

Yeah, if you want to go with the necromancy specialization, gnomes are not for you.
It's strange that the game does not show the illusionist specialization. I tried creating a gnome really quick in bg2 myself and it shows the specialization fine, both during the class selection during creation, and also on the record screen during gameplay?

This is what it looks like for me (i'm running the latest GOG version of BG2:EE) :

That's strange. What is the version number of your install ? it should show up at the starting screen when you run baldur's gate, and also on the options screen (when you press ESC during gameplay.)

The lastest version number for both bg1:ee and bg2:ee is 2.1.63.2 right now, if you have anything lower then that you should look into getting the latest patch.

Edit : i just checked it again in my bg1:ee+SoD install, and it shows up fine there as well :

the red circle shows where you can find the version number.
of course, the screen will look a little different for bg2:ee, but the principle stays the same.

My screen looks totally different. Are you talking about 1ee or 2ee??

Is anyone else having these differences? He has GoG and I have steam??

Well after playing around with character creation I have found that the gnome I have issues with the illusionist in both multi and single class. I also only have 2 specialty options for elf and only 4 specialty choices for a half-elf. The other 4 races can be mages (probably to the tweaks pack) but can't choose any specialty mage.

yeah, like i said in the post, the 2nd screenshot i posted was from BG1:EE (+siege of dragonspear expansion) , just as an example. My BG2:EE options screen looks just the same as what you posted.
still, it looks like your game is up to date since you have v2.1.63.2 - so that can't be the problem.

I'm going to have to assume that you've got some kind of mod installed that is causing your problems.
Try to uninstall the game and mods (backup what saves you do still have) and reinstall it.
Before you install any mods, check if running the game from a fresh install has solved the problems. if it has, you can slowly reintroduce the mods 1 by 1.
after each mod you install i'd check the game again, until you find the one that causes the problem.

The new patches broke most mods. You should check the official forums of those mods to see if they've been updated already. Otherwise, they can mess up your game.

I tried a google but they just kept talking about the original bg2ee patch or just bg2 in general.
I tried looking around on here too but no luck.
Do you have a link to where these mods can be found?
My main concern is the tweakpack.
The item upgrades is nice but it wasn't up to date anyway.
    Dungeon-b-gone is handy too.

the bg2 tweak pack is currently being worked on, the new beta version is currently on it's 4th iteration (keep in mind that being a beta, this might not work as intended for a full 100% yet.)
you can find the mod and details on the beamdog forums here : https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/48165/testers-wanted-tweaks-is-dead-long-live-tweaks

The new compatible mods list can be found here :
    https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/50340/bg-ee-2-0-and-siege-of-dragonspear-compatible-mods/p1
Though most of the mods in that list are intended for bg1 only.

OK. Thanks. I don't like betas unless I'm running a new game. Betas always cause me trouble. Lol.

Well, since v2.x broke almost all the mods out there, you're either going to have to run with beta mods or no mods at all (and using the old ones that you already had installed will only mess up your game.)
The 2.1 patch only came out quite recent, so there's not been a huge amount of time for modders to work on restoring mods to working order.

The alternative is to switch back to 1.3 beta if you're using Steam. Of course, all the 2.x saves will no longer work.
