I noticed they took away the option in Naskel. Anywhere else I might be able to steal the things I sold?

A thief stealing is not cheating - it´s using that characters skills in a way that a RPG should allow. After all if a thief can pickpocket people he should be able to lift some wares from a shop too.

However shouldn´t it be possible to steal in Nashkel?

How high is your thiefs pickpocket skill?

Yes, because if you repeatedly sell a merchant some expensive stuff and it then immediately disappears, the merchant would totally still do business with you.

It's one thing to steal a merchant's wares and something else entirely to steal back your own stuff. So no, it's certainly not something an RPG should allow if it hopes at all to be realistic.

It's only barely a step away from system abuse and it's entirely unnecessary as well (you can easily amass over 400k gold in excess by the end of the game).

As for the ability to steal, I think I saw in the patch notes recently that Nashkel merchant can no longer be stolen from.

In BG EE stolen items are marked as stolen so you can’t sell them back to that merchant. You can only sell them once, steal them and then try to fence them off to some more shady merchant you have first to find.

Shoplifting happens in real life so it’s quite realistic. The problem is finding the right balance of difficulty (e.g. how much pickpocket skill do you need to lift something heavier or unwieldy without the shop’s owner noticing) and the right punishment if caught.

How so? By fighting? That’s what a fighter does, isn’t it? How is using a fighters skill to defeat a foe and plunder it’s belongings not cheating to gain gold but using a thief characters skills is?

No, a CRPG needs to allow ways for all characters to use their abilities.

    Wasn’t that those change?

I understood that as only forcing players to actually raise their thief’s pickpocket skill to sensible values instead of neglicting it for find traps or open locks.

All IE games mark stolen items as stolen. I'm not talking about stealing loops. That is actual system abuse.

No amount of skill will stop a shopkeeper from noticing that the items he's being sold are disappearing right after he's bought them. What you're proposing goes far beyond simple shoplifting. The system is contrived enough as it is. Being able to to repeatedly reacquire items from any merchant without arousing any suspicion is not something that a low-level adventurer with a limited amount of time is capable of ever hoping to achieve. Go on a real life marketplace and see how often you can pull that off without the guy telling you to piss off or worse.

You're missing the point entirely. The system already does allow thieves to do what they're good at, what he's wanting to do is abuse the way the system does so.

I said recently, not 3 years ago.

Are you seriously just trying to annoy me with those accent diacritics? It's not a replacement for an apostrophe. <_<

On a related note, i know that there are multiple stores ran by members of the thieves guild in BG2 that you can fence items to right from the start like Roger the fence in the temple district sewers - but the only fence i know of in BG1 is Black Lily, who is only available after you gain access to the city of Baldurs Gate itself.

Isa she really the only fence available, or is there another one i am simply not aware of ?

The EE version of BG made Erdane a merchant who buys stolen goods in the area where Durlag’s Tower is

As far as I know he’s the only fence before entering the city of Baldur’s Gate.

I'm just looking for a shopkeep I can steal from, don't much care about the stolen goods.

As far as i know the shopkeeps in beregost are still free to plunder, unless they changed that too - i havn't checked it in a while, stealing from shops is something i save for BG2, i never see a need for it in BG1 simply because of the huge amount you'll naturally amass even without it.

Someone sure took pains to nerf stealing in EE, which is odd since it was never OP in the original BG (very few people to sell these items to, very few enchanted items to steal).

I noticed this awhile ago but forgot I made this thread :) You can still steal but the place where you have the option changed! It used to be on the main screen but now it's in the inventory screen after you talk to the person.
