Does it double up if you use two characters, or is it pointless?

I don't believe two identical bard songs stack, HOWEVER if you use say a Skald and a Blade, they will stack. I'm not sure about a regular bard and a blade however.

I have a Jester and 2 normal bards. The different ones do combine but I'm unsure about the stacking, henceforth the question

In earlier versions, Bard songs of the same type would stack, but that was a bug. In current BGee, it's been fixed and they now don't stack. As you say, however, Bard songs of different types do stack.
It's the type of song which matters, not the type of Bard. An unkitted Bard and a Blade have the same song, so they don't stack together. Skalds and Jesters each have their own song, so they do stack with other types of Bard (but not with another Skald or Jester, of course).

It was the Blade's description that "bard song does not improve with levels" that made me think the game might consider it a different song from the regular Bard, although I'm unsure in the original how the regular unkitted bard actually improves with levels until you get HLA's.

I've read that the unkitted Bard song is meant to improve with levels, but I've not noticed that it actually does improve. (Until HLAs, as you say, when the Enhanced Bard Song is a big boost.)

That was my experience as well, and past posts about the original had it that nobody could figure out any improvements for the standard bard.

They did! But you can't have it in BG1ee, it's one of the High Level Abilities which become available at the first level-up after 3,000,000 xp (so typically late-BG2ee:SoA, and obviously only if you're a Bard). This is the same criterion as in the original versions of BG1/2. It's quite similar to the normal song of a Skald, so you can get something like it (although a weaker version more suited to lower levels) from the start if you wish to experience it.
