BoM
Rules & Guidelines
Before starting to post on our forums,
we encourage our members to read our rules & guidelines.
Registering
Registration is required if you plan to post new threads or reply to existing
ones. Registration is free, and you are not required to post your real name.
You are required to provide your actual e-mail address, however. (Which will never
be sold, given out, exchanged or anything similar. We hate websites that do
that as much as you.)
It is important that you list an e-mail that you actually check, not register with some throwaway account. The reason why we need you to list an e-mail that you check regularly is that in the event that we need to contact you for some reason (related to your visiting these forums), you will actually receive our correspondence. Note also that all the notifications of responses to your posts/threads will be sent to your e-mail on record.
Gems
The images that appear under your username
on the left side of your posts are gems. (Many members will recognize them from the Baldur's Gate games.) Every registered member gets one to start
with, and more valuable ones according to the number of posts that they make. Only
the last collected gem will display in any post.
You cannot change the gems for avatars or portraits yourself, but we can do it for certain contributing members of our community.
The gems reflect the experience you have earned by posting on our boards, not how many posts you can make in the shortest time possible to get more precious gems, so please don't do that. We will trust your own judgment to decide when you are adding something valuable to any given discussion.
Ranking
The value of gems you collect
increases with the number of posts you have. These are the gems and the number
of posts you get them at:
-0 Turquoise (5 gp value)

Custom
Avatars, Portraits & Titles
There are several ways of getting a custom avatar or portrait and a title displayed
below your user name:
- Upload anything that will be posted exclusively on Sorcerer's Place, either
a walkthrough, guide, hack etc. Screenshots do not count, but are still very welcome!
- Support Sorcerer's Place by making purchases via our site stores. Contact us and you will be able to pick an avatar or portrait for yourself from our lists. Please note that you should state when you made the purchase, list one or two items that you bought and which of our stores you bought from so that we can check our records.
- Donate any amount
of money - every bit helps. (Click here
for more info. Contact is the same as above.) You can be sure that the funds
we receive will be put to a good use at Sorcerer's Place since we are always
striving to make it even better than it already is. The costs of running SP
in its entirety are several hundred dollars per month. With the little amount
of money that advertising brings in these days, we can't even cover half of the server
hosting expenses, let alone anything else. (The costs include, among other
things, paying for the domain name, hosting, software used in creating the
site, forum software upgrades, coding jobs, occasional site redesigns etc.). If you want
to show your appreciation for all the hard work and thousands of hours invested
in the site since 1999, and for our commitment to bring you the best in the
future as well, you can donate by clicking on the "PayPal Donate" button below. Thanks!
Custom titles (text displayed below your username) are available for everyone entitled to a custom avatar/portrait.
NOTE: If your non-SPS account on the Boards o' Magick is inactive for more than 6 months, it will be considered abandoned and your avatar or portrait will be returned to the pool of available ones.
Member
of The Week, Distinguished Member & SPS Account Holder Titles
The Member of The Week title is awarded
to those members of BoM who perform an extraordinary service for SP. This service
can be any number of things; for example: a very generous donation to help with the
costs of running SP, exclusive submission of high quality content, performing
a personal favour for the site owner, etc. Whenever you see a BoM member with
the golden MoTW title, you can be sure that they have done something highly beneficial
for the community.
As far as donations are concerned, anyone who donates $100 or more receives the Member of The Week title, which expires after one week. To earn a permanent Distinguished Member title, $500 or more in (successive) donations is required.
The Sorcerer's Place Supporter (SPS) Account Holder title duration depends on the SPS subscription option of the account holder.
Sorcerer's
Place Common Acronyms
Please click here for a full list of acronyms commonly
used on Sorcerer's Place.
Smilies
Smilies are keyboard characters used to convey an emotion, such as a smile :)
or a frown :(. This message board automatically converts certain smilies to
a graphical representation. For a full list of our smilies and their meaning, check here.
New
Post Images
Every time you begin browsing the
board, a cookie is set in your browser containing the date and time. When
you return later, this cookie is read, and the date in the cookie is compared
to the last post time of each thread. If the thread has had new posts since
you last visited the board, it will be listed in bold and marked with a "blue dot" icon. You have the option to mark individual as well as all forums as read.
Private
Conversations/Messages
All registered users may initiate private conversations with other registered users on
our forums. A conversation is conceptually similar to a regular forum thread, only limited to select users only. You
can access conversations in your account's Conversations and Inbox sections.
You can also elect to be notified
by e-mail whenever someone starts a new conversation with you.
To start a conversation, click on a member's user name and select "Start a Conversation". You can also start a conversation via your Inbox, among other places.
If at any time you receive a spamming or abusing conversation, please click on the "Report" link inside it. This will forward a copy of the offensive conversation message to our moderators and they will deal with the offender, if warranted.
What
is the Ignore List?
Ignore lists apply to conversations and threads. Anyone you add to your ignore
list can no longer start conversations with you, and their posts will be hidden from your view. You can put someone on your
ignore list by viewing the member's profile (card) and clicking on the "Ignore" link.
What
is the Follow List?
You can "Follow" users and in turn, other users can Follow you. The posts from users you Follow show up in a separate new posts feed ("Your News Feed") accessible from your pop-down shortcuts panel that opens when you hover over your username to the left of the Inbox link in the top right area of every forum page.
Alerts / New
PM Notifications
When you receive a conversation message, the Alerts indicator in the upper right corner of any forum page will show you how many unread PMs you have. If you have enabled
the option in your preferences, you will also receive an e-mail notification
of the new PM, as well as notice a floating notification further down on any forum page.
Tagging Users
You can "tag" other members, that is draw the attention of a certain user to your current post (or other forum content) by prefacing their username with "@", usually inside a post. The user being tagged (e.g. @Taluntain) will receive an alert that they have been mentioned by you in your post and will be able to quickly view the post in question.
Using
BB Codes
BB Codes are similar to HTML, but
offer only certain preformatted functions, such as hyperlinking, image display, bolding
and italicizing. Complete details on BB Codes are listed
here.
Moderators
& Administrators
Moderators control individual forums. They can edit, delete, or move any posts
in their forums. If you have a question about a particular forum, you should
direct it to your forum moderator. A
moderator's job is to make sure people are following the
rules of our forums.
More than anything, we want our members to have helpful, fun and interesting discussions. Spam and abusive posts don't allow for that, so persistent offenders will be banned. If you do get banned at some point, please don't try to get around the ban by posting from a friend's computer or new account, as it won't work and will only annoy us more.
Keep in mind that all the moderators have the right to edit, delete, move or close any posts for our own reasons without warning. Administrators can do everything the regular moderators can, plus all of the other more complex operations that are not accessible to moderators.
Changing
Your Profile Settings
You may easily change any of your profile settings by clicking on your username to the left of the Inbox link located near the top
right of each page. You must be logged in in order to update your profile. Please note that in order to change your personal details (location, occupation, home page, about and your signature), you are required to have a small number of public posts on record. This is one of our measures to help prevent profile spamming.
Cookies
You must be
logged in to use most functions of our forums, so if you ever experience
login problems, you may have a problem with the cookies being set in
your browser. Please refer to this page for more information on our cookie usage.
Editing
Your Posts
You may edit your own posts at any time. Look for the "Edit" link on the post to be edited. No one else can edit your post,
except for the forum moderators and administrators. A note
is generated at the bottom of each post that is edited so that everyone knows
when a post has been edited.
The ability to delete your own posts is disabled on all forums, but you can edit a post blank and leave a note for the moderators to delete it if necessary. Try not to do this when your post is the one that started a thread, since we will not delete the whole thread if a meaningful discussion has already started in it.
Attaching
Files
Attaching files may be enabled in certain forums, though any content submissions should be done via our submissions system and not as post attachments.
Searching
For Specific Posts
You may search for specific posts
based on a word or words found in the posts, by a particular registered member,
by date, and/or by forum. Simply type your query into the search box near the top right of most
pages.
Signatures
Once you've made a few public posts, you can set a signature via your profile settings. If signatures bother you, you can globally disable their showing under Preferences/Options.
What
do I do if I forget my user name and/or password?
Retrieving your user name and password
is simple.
All of the pages that require you to identify yourself with your user name and
password carry a "lost password" link that you can use to have your username
and password e-mailed instantly to your e-mail address on record.
E-mail
Notification
If you create a new thread, you will receive an e-mail notification of new replies
to your thread by default. Please make sure that you have a working e-mail listed in your profile, otherwise
no notification will ever reach you! This feature can be turned off in your preferences.
What
is Quick Reply?
Quick Reply allows you to add a reply to an open thread without leaving the thread
itself. At the bottom of each thread will be a field in which you may write your
reply. Once you are done, you may post the reply directly or move the text to the full reply page by clicking on the "More Options..." button.
How do I
take my name off the list of online members?
You can control your visibility under Preferences/Options. Note that even when invisible to normal members, you will still be visible to mods and admins.
How can
I tell when/where a certain user was last seen?
You can view any user's last known activity by viewing his or her profile page. If
the user has not been here recently, this information will not be available.
What is this XenForo (XF) I keep reading about?
XenForo is the forum software platform that our community is currently running on. Previously, Boards o' Magick were running on UBB.classic and later vBulletin, so we are currently on our 3rd generation of forum software. XenForo is introducing many changes and innovations over our previous platforms; too many to cover them all in this FAQ. If you would like to learn additional tips & tricks on getting the most out of your XF experience, please read this thread. Feel free to post any questions you might have about the forums' use there as well!
