[IMG] I've scared to death of the character editors and installing the patch (1.6 or whatever it's called). I have an IQ of 4 when it comes to installing these things and usually screw it up and have to start the game from scratch (and I've never used an editor - scares the feces from me). Does anyone have any advice:

Does the patch cause any problems in the game? Should I do something to insure myself in case I need to reinstall the game but want to keep the ongoing saved games?

Are the editors easy to use? Can a moron like me navigate through them pretty well? And which is the best one? (And is the script editor something different entirely?)

I'm stuck in the game (see my Astrolabe post) and I'm going for broke tonight and installing the patch and editor so I can move on in the game. But I want to make an as informed decision as possible before all hell breaks loose on my PC. You see, I'm a dope.

[IMG] Um... actually the Official 1.6 patch is there to FIX problems, not cause them. That'd be kinda stupid, wouldn't it?
The official patch fixes bugs and similar (as is written in it's description).

About editors - most have a graphic interface so they are easy enough to use.
But before you edit your savegame, it's always wise to leave a backup copy just in case that anything goes wrong. Then you can just revert back if you corrupt them. But usually it works just fine.

Um...I know that patches are "designed" to fix problems - I'm not THAT much of a dope - but I also know that patches can bring along different problems from the ones they are designed to repair (i.e., "beta" patches) - like a remedy with side effects that are as bad as the original disease. I think I've come across a comment or two on this bulletin board regarding problems with patches and cheats, for example. Am I wrong in thinking the 1.5 patch did things that the 1.6 patch undid, implying that there were problems with the first patch? And that a future 1.7 may fix bugs in 1.6? That's actually what I'm asking about - are there problems with 1.6 that make it wiser to wait. I've certainly read the literature Interplay provided on the 1.6 patch and all that it fixes - but that doesn't mean it's any more flawless a patch than Icewind is flawless a game. (Although a great game - viva la gnomes!) I just don't want to install a patch that will screw things up or change something about the game unfavorably. That'd be kind stupid, wouldn't it?

As for editors, it sounds like there a few different ones. Is one better than another?

    Thanks.

[IMG] Look, most of us are using it and I don't hear anyone complaining. ;)
Really, just get the latest patch and you'll be fine... certainly better than no patch at all. When a newer patch comes out, you just install it over the old one. Simple as that.

As for editors... well download the whole bunch and pick the one you think it's easiest to use... Dale Keeper is easy to use... so are all TeamBG tools... and there are some others on the site too that I haven't tried.
Browse through, pick your favorite. That's the reason I have so much stuff up on the site. It'd be pretty dull if there was just one walkthru and one editor.

Actually I'm not sure on this one. I might need some one to back me up or at least correct me...

    *BUT*

doesn't patch 1.06 cause the movie freeze problem in Chapter 6, when you teleport back to Easthaven? Or is this caused by one of the little "updates" I've thrown in there? ie. XP cap remover, mage scribe update...etc??

Actually, the movie error happens whether you have the patch or not.

I've used no editors etc., and I went through it numerous times with and without the patch and had the same problem.

I'm sure you remember Logun, you helped me out =)

    Cheers!

I've never had a problem with that movie even though I have the 1.06 patch and a character editor. Speaking of which, I have Gam Editor v0.90 and it sucks. It is a terible patch. You can't change 18/XX strengths and sometimes it just doesn't work at all.

[IMG] I've actually installed the 1.6 patch and was able to use the cheats to get past the Shattered Hand glitch I was having (Astrolabe parts vanished from my inventory before I could turn them over to the lich). Despite my fears, everything ran smoothly, thank buddha, and now I'm delving into the Deep.

I don't think I'll download or need to download an editor any time soon. I want to complete the game as faithfully as possible the first time through before I start Monty Halling myself with editors - although it would be helpful to have someone proficient with flails since I've now found a slew of great ones, but oh well, my Paladin will become proficient next level anyway. But I'd still appreciate any input as to which editor is the best and where to download it.

About the "script editor." What the hell is that? The IWD manual only makes a passing reference to it, and Internet searches result in few results and ones that don't explain what it is or does, other than that it's "AI" related (Artificial Intelligence?). I have it downloaded but uninstalled. I don't think it's the same as a regular editor, but I'm not sure, and I don't want to install it unless I know. Anybody know? It's just sitting there on my desktop, taunting me.

Thanks for all the input, by the way...

You know the scripts you can choose when clicking on Customize Character in the game?
Fighter aggressive, cleric defensive, default etc etc. ?
Well this enables you to edit them further than the default ones. Simple as that. No hack, no cheat, just something you might want to tinker with it you're REALLY bored.

  11. Way to go Neverworlder!
I feel the same way, I always try to beat the game "legit" and almost never use cheats or editors.

You edit and create a "super" character and beat the snot out of everything in the game. I don't see the point. It takes all the fun out of a game if you can blow through it with your level 25 fighter/mage/thief/cleric.
It might be cool if you could get patches/editors that had new animations or different weapon graphics, but I don't understand why you would want to mess with your character stats.

Am I in the minority here? What do you people think of character editors?

  12. Wingfoot Guest

i agree with Lord Balduran and Neverworlder on this topic. i beat it legit the first two times. now i am using 4 characters ( i just cant get enough of this game) and i think it is bad enough that i have the Max Hit Point button enabled, but hey its there, why not use it this time through.
as for character editors, i have never used one, wouldn't know how to, and dont want to figure how to use one. why cheat your way thru a game, its no fun that way. i did use cheats once in BG, but my characters were to powerful, so i quit that game. maybe its just me, but the game is supposed to be a challenge, why change it.
