    [IMG] *** Possible Spoiler ***

I just finished the Burial Isle in the Expansion and found it to be one of the more challenging of the levels that I have palyed so far. I found that the tripe-threat (Burrow Wrights, Drowned Dead, and Wailing Virgins) that composed the bulk of the enemies in the caverns were a well balanced offensive powerhouse.

The Burrow Wights did moderate damage but could move at a hasted speed and would seek out your party and keep you busy until his buddies could get to you. The Drowned Dead are juggernauts that moved slow but seemed to have numerous attachs and did heavy damage. Those two alone were bad enough with out their spectral female friend, the Wailing Virgins, who like to hide just out of view and wreak as much havoc on your party as possible.

With two clerics and alot of rest I made it though but I don't think I ever found a really effective strategy against them. In both combat and spell casting I think there was a better way. I tried summoning fodder between me and them and they just tore through them like they were cardboard cut-outs. Even my Elementals were mowed down like they were gibberlings.

The most effective combat strategy I came up with was giving my thief free action and sneaking up on the monsters. The thief would fire one shot from his bow then run like hell (also gave thief boots of speed). I would have the thief run right though a web spell and commence to firing on the monsters stuck in the web. My fighters would handle the ones that got through and my magic users would fire ball and ice storm the area of the web.

My party would have to be hasted to be any kind of effective agianst the monsters. Even with and AC of -12 my fighters would get pounded.

My question to everybody is this:

What combat Strategies did you find effective on the Burial Isle? I would really love to hear them.

The only thing that worked for me was to kill the Wailing Virgins as quickly as possible. Magic Missile and arrows worked well since they tried to keep their distance from melee. My Dwarf Fighter had a mace or something that had a chance of killing undead on a successful hit, so I'd send him after them as well.

Turn Undead was very helpful in keeping the Barrow Wights away until I wanted to engage them, and also helped with the Drowned Dead. The only problem with the Drowned Dead was that missiles were essentially ineffective, so you had to go toe-to-toe.

[IMG] I tried Turn Undead, but it I must of been too impatient with it.

I am going to go though it again and see if I can get thought it without using shadow keeper.

    Wow, this board is slow.

I guess everyone still hangs around the BG2 Board.

I've been going to post here, but I wanted to confirm some things before I posted so I didn't sound stupid and haven't had a chance to loadup IWD lately.

Anyway... There's a ring you can buy at the mages tower on Burial Isle that doubles the amount of level 5(?) spells your mage can memorize. Also, you can get a level 5 spell there too called sunburst(?) which casts a ring of fire around your mage. I memorized several of these spells and used invisibility to walk into a group of baddies and cast this spell. Then I ran my mage back to my party and they took out the weakened enemies. I also used spells like bless, curse, prayer, etc. a lot to keep the battle in my favor on Burial Isle.

I'll try to double check the ring properties and the spell name, but I think I got them right...

Since no one told you yet . . .

Check the FAQ's on double posts. I know you're new here, and yeah, everyone pretty much hangs out on BG2 & WhatNots, BUT if you post back to back like that, you'll get in trouble with the Sorcerer himself (and that's not good for anyone).

So be patient, give us your opinions and questions, and wait at least a week before adding a second "Hello, is anyone out there" post. In the meantime, just edit your previous post to add new comments (click on the paper & pen icon).

    C ya!

    Bowie,

Thanks for the input. I like to hear other people's strategy for handling some of the tougher opponents. Some people come up with some pretty creative battle solutions. There are so many spells in the game that is impossible to try them all out on various opponents.

I will have to try out the spell you mentioned.

    Mathetais,

I am sorry, I did not see your name listed as a moderator... oh, that's right YOUR NOT ONE!

If you were you might know that I have been posting to these boards of over a year under the name of Wraith Blackthorne. I am quite aware of what will upset the moderators and very rarely do anything inflamatory.

I was simply stating the obvious fact that the IWD board does not get near as much traffic as the BG2 one does. Some how I greatly doubt that would upset the moderators.

Why don't you try leaving the moderating to the moderators. If they need your help, maybe they will ask.

    Mournblade;

Look - I don't want to fight. Just read this message from Tal and see if my message to you was warranted.
    http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000559.html

In short, Tal asked for all our help in eliminating your sort of trash.

BTW: you've done this twice in one thread. It's going to be fun to watch the wrath fall!

(You try to be nice to some people. . .sheek  )

Ok, here is the rule verbatim...

    Posting Doubles
One of the most annoying things happening lately on our boards is an influx of new members from other boards who are used to posting two or more replies in a row to a certain topic before anyone else has the time to reply to them. Here this is considered "trash posting" or "spamming" and will NOT be tolerated. All users of Boards O' Magick have the option to edit their posts. So if you think you forgot to add something to your original post, made a spelling error or something similar, don't post again but rather edit your original post.
This is not just some rule we made up to annoy our users, there are valid reasons behind it. The most important one being (read Avatars below) our implementation of avatars for the users. Since the avatars change according to the number of posts a member makes, you can see how posting twice in a row can be considered spamming to get your posts rank up and avatar changed. We can't make any exceptions to this rule; either we let everyone do it, or no one. We chose the latter.
There are some valid exceptions when posting doubles is allowed, for instance after a long period of inactivity in a topic (at least a week's time). If you post something totally unrelated to your previous reply, that will also be allowed. But these are two extreme occurrences which do not happen often.

    ********

I am not spamming, nor am I trying to raise levels. I could care less about my level or recorded number of posts. I admit that I made an honest mistake about the double posts as I did not know about the rule. I promise not to do it agian.

The fact that I still see posts on the boards from Shura means that people are not getting canned for isolated incidents of flaming.

Besides, if I had truly flammed you, you still be tyring to dowse the flame.

So, no more double posts from MournBlade and death to all "Would-be Moderators".

[IMG] MournBlade, watch that flapping tongue. If I hadn't seen the magic words "I promise not to do it again" in your last post, you'd be perm banned by now.

And even due to the fact that you came to your senses (albeit late), I resent that tone of yours. Mathetais IS helping us out (as he said), and I encourage all users to do this because we are not omnipresent here 24 hours a day.

And you must be either a) really blind or b) really stupid to be posting here for over a year and STILL not know how much doubles go on my nerves, when the whole boards are full of my posts stating this fact and linking to the FAQ. So which one is it?

And Shura left some time ago, not to mention that we deal with individual cases here. In this case, YOU are in the spotlight, no one else.

As for your last quote, yea, it really says everything we need to know about you.
Well, it got you noticed, if nothing else. But trust me, you'd be better off without me being notified of you in this manner...

Have you tried tweaking down the game settings in the configuration to improve your performance for that battle?

The bear is tough but moves very solwly. If all else fails, deal with the wolves and then continualy retreat and deal missle damage from a distance. Although the bear dispatches them rather quickly, summoning cannon fodder between you and the bears helps.

The bear is not an extremely tough fight. I would look at tweaking the game settings, maybe just for that fight, then you can return them to normal.

    That's my 2 cents.

    Well, ok!

But I need those 3D drivers... Most games
usually speeds up when I get the drivers right!

[IMG] I fought this battle 6 times. The first 5 attempts, my party members kept getting zapped by the bear's spell (hopelessnes, I think) and would then get swarmed over and beat up by the spirit wolves. I got angry. On my 6th attempt, I left my entire party back by the boat with Ned. I tanked up my main fighter with Oil of Speed, Potion of Clarity, and Potion of Cloud Giant Strength and sent him in alone with the Cairn Blade (my fighter is a Grandmaster of 2 handed sword). He was never affected by the bear's spell. He killed the polar bear first and the rest were easy after that.

Goes to show you that Fighters rule...especially when they're chemically dependent.
