The last battle with Sarevok was giving me a real headache for the longest time because everyone would die before I could scratch them. Someone suggested I lure them out one at a time and the first two tries this failed miserably and then something wonderful happened.

THe major cloud effect spells that get set off at the start of the battle backfired. I managed to get my PC away from them before they caused any damage. But what was better was they caught two of Sarevok's buddies and left them totally incopacitated for the entire fight. Hence killing Sarevok and his little mage was a breeze.

Has this happened to anyone else or did I jsut get a fluke situation?

I have only beat him once, but when I did, all I did was surround them with summons over and over again, while pelting with arrows and spells... It was over pretty quickly.

OK here is a solution (rather more). Parts of this quote are usable separately too as hints or tactics.

"Hard battle, if there is no proper concept how to win it. Here is a sure one: You need a character who uses bows well (THAC0 under 10 recommended); Arrows of Dispelling (necessary), and Acid Arrows are useful too. Collect a lot of antimagic potions (Potion of Magic Shielding, Protection, etc.) and Protection from Magic Scrolls. They might be handy. After you have arrived to the temple, do not go anywhere and summon as many creatures as you can (Wands of Monster Summoning can help too) and haste them, but try to keep them close to your party. Cast your defensive spells, drink potions, use scrolls (Do not use Protection from Magic scrolls on your spellcaster characters) Now with your fastest character (Boots of Speed or Hasted) run to Sarevok, and as soon as the dialog ends, return to your place. Sarevok will follow you (Angelo won''t), and Semaj and Tazok will appear. As soon as you see Semaj, attack him with ARROWS OF DISPELLING! (If you are not quick enough, he destroys the most of your creatures with Cloudkill). He will lose all his protections. Now use other arrows to kill him. While Sarevok and Tazok fight your creatures, shoot as many Magic Missiles to Sarevok as you can (He will fall). If you have a character with better THAC0 than 1 while using any ranged weapon, attack Sarevok wth him too. (Sarevok is practically immune to fire, cold, acid(99), etc.)"

    More cheap tactics: :D

Have 4 of your guys drink invisible potions and stay out of the way.
Have improved invisiblity cast on your best archer, and on your mage (use scrolls if need be).
Approach and cast CloudKill near where they gather (if you want the conversation get close enough to see them). Back off and use lighting/fireball wands and have your archer use the aroows that make the fireball spell. You should be able to finish off all but the big guy before the invisblility wears off. Use some summon monsters then to keep him busy while blasting away with +2 arrows/stones, being careful if the cloudkill is still there as that will wipe out any summoned monsters instantly.

Honestly is there any non-cheesey way to beat this guy face to face that doesnt involve cloudkill or copius use of the wand of monster summoning?

I beat him fair and square with my fighter/mage once. I had the ring which doubles your first level spells and hit him with 8 magic missiles, kept running away from him with the boots of speed and eventually finished him off with arrows.
