Once I have finished soloing ToB, I plan to take a party of 3 through IWD and HOW, has anyone got any ideas on the make-up. I was thinking, cleric/ranger, fighter/druid, f/m/t.

Take a fighter or paladin as a blocker you will need someone to stand between the hordes and your spell casters.

Avoid the f/m/t at all costs! Experience is divided, so s/he will be level 1 or 2 when everyone else (even the dual-classed) will be level 4,5 or 6.
I would recommend an Elven Ranger (scouting and good h-t-h), a Gnome Cleric/Illusionist (s/he will get so many spells it's not funny) and a dwarf fighter or a human paladin for blocking and superior h-t-h.

I recently completed IWD/HoW/TotLM with three characters. It was a blast, but the HoW areas were pretty tough. Then again I took on HoW early on, when my single class fighter was ninth level.

I used a single class fighter wielding axes, a cleric/ranger wielding a one handed blunt weapons with no shield for that extra attack, and a f/m/t. As Tom Tayler W stated, I'd use a fighter or paladin instead of a fighter/druid. You won't need that much healing power, for you will have enough gold to buy as many healing potions as your heart desires. Plus a cleric/ranger will get druid spells at some point, depnding on whether you have HoW or not.

[IMG] I almost finished the game with a dwarven fighter, elven mage and a gnome thief/cleric.

I still say if you want to have a multi-class character you can just as well make him tripple. The worst jump is obviously from one class to two classes, right?
    ------------------------------------------

I would indeed suggest a F/M/T. Especially if you only have three members. They are very potent and their many purposes and strategic possibilities easily makes up for the two levels lower. You now have a thief and a mage and an Archer for that sake. Now all you need is someone to whack even harder.

A dwarven Fighter and Fighter/cleric(F/C/M for that matter). Two mages are excellent for summonings and defensive spells. With the added Cleric spells it gets even better. Since you play three men or women there is plenty Xp to catch for the multiclassed.
    ------------------------------------------

A second and more simple approach would be to Start off with a 3 fighters one as a F/C. Don't worry about the traps. Just walk and heal. Your two pure fighters will soon blast anything to oblivion. They get XP twice the rate as normal games (with six characters)
    ---------------------------------------------
The first approach is far more bullet proof, but the second is quicker at first and especially less demanding on your strategic mind.

I've gone for a Paladin, Cleric/Ranger and a mage/thief. It's going all right but the paladin is running away in levels. I'd prefer a group that were more equal in levels, Bearing in mind the m/t and the c/r what other multiclass(two) class character would fit in?

traps aren't a problem. really. They hurt a little and that's it. No big deal. A mage with the knock spell and thats the end of thieves. Unless you want them for sneaking etc. Which I like.

You obviously need a fighter if the Paladin retires to pure liquor and rosemary.
    so either F/T or a F/C or a F/M.
your Cleric/ranger covers healing and sneaking. Your m/t covers all thieving you need. By far.
So I suggest a F/M. He can use his spells to become a fierce warrior.

    ----------------------------------------
Edit; Today I made a 3 man party of one F/C and two pure fighters. Just to test the necessity of a thief. Baaah. The fighters Trash everything. Already at level 6 when killing Lysan the frostmaiden. All spells and mage/bard/thief related items can be sold (lots of money). The one fighter has an active Thach0 of 9... sorry 7 now. And the game hasn't even started for real yet. Definately a potent 3 man team.
