I am a big D&D fan and have yet to play this game. I first heard about this game a while back and just never found the time and money to go out and buy this game. Should I buy this game and if so which packaging should I buy?

If you first are going to buy it, buy the package with all expansions in it, you'll get tired of the OC quickly enough. Having several expansions is not a bad thing. I think it's called neverwinter nights gold.

Many here might tell you to skip it, although IMO it's worth a try. Maybe you'll like the Original Campaign, or probably not. But anyway you can download loooads of fan made modules, and the internetplay is quite good i've heard.

NwN is definately worth a try! I'll agree with Thor that the OC ain't all that, and though the expansions are better, they ain't all that either. What is all that, however, is online campaigns! You should of course play through at least the OC first, to get a feeling on how the game works; but as fast as you can, you should join Neverwinter Connections and get to play some interesting online campaigns. Especially since your a D&D fan! What these can offer to you, are ongoing games with a group of friends, in a world controlled and created by a DM. the are hundreds, no thousands of hours of game play in store for you, if you chose to buy NwN.
By the way, I believe you should buy the platinum ed. which is a DvD with nwn + exp's, and some other stuff too.

olimikrig - I planned on buying platinum edition. I believe it has all the added campaigns for NWN.

Indeed. It works like charm. Just one DVD, no CD swapping. It has everything you need, except the patches, of course. Make sure to run the update before you play. You may need to start SoU in the unpatched version and patch it after starting the game -- don't know why but it happened to me. The OC and XP campaigns aren't bad. Not the same epic thing as in BG2 but quite good for a module (which they are). I think. I haven't played any external module yet.

Platinum Edition is the lastest 'boxed set' for NWN. It's got all the expansions and some miscellaneous goodies, iirc. Up here, I've seen it at EB for $47. It's more than likely cheaper online.

It's worth a try if you like that sort of game. The solo campaigns aren't brilliant but the character creation options are numerous and there are plenty of other modules you can try.

Well, I've finally gotten around to buying it. I got the Platinum version. That's the package that makes the most sense to me. $40.00 beats paying what you would have paid for it all if you had paid immediately for each game and expansion as they were released. I'll get the OC and expansions over with first, but I really look forward to seeing the stuff other people have made. That is what sealed the deal for me. Part of why I've waited so long is for the price to go down and plenty of time for people to create modules.

OK, I noticed Chev mentioned something about patches. I did the ritual anytime I get a new game and searched for a patch. I went to the NWN downloads section here at SP and I did not see any patches posted. Then I read somewhere that somebody said the patches were automatically built in the later versions. So, I'm a bit confused on that one.

So having just bought NWN Platinum with the intent that I want to play fan made mods and the OC and expansions with as few glitches as possible, what downloads should I be on the look out for? (other than the obvious fan made modules) :p

NWN has a handy auto-patching feature, so you never need to look around for patches. Just open the game's launcher and click on the "Update" button and you'll find yourself in the auto-patching utility. It'll then download and install the latest available patch.

The expansions and new game packs had the latest available patches integrated upon release, but new patches have almost certainly been released since Platinum went on sale, so just go through the procedure I outlined above. Unlike with IE games which got a patch or two at best, NWN must have got over 20 by now and is still actively being patched, although on an increasingly longer schedule, but still... At least BioWare made up for releasing NWN in such a buggy state by providing new patches to date.

After you're patched, you should also install CEP (Community Expansion Pack; link in SP NWN Toolset & Related subsection), which is a collection of the best community made material many builders then use in modules. Though with some more extensive fan made modules you'll still need to download some additional content to make them work properly, but CEP is a good foundation to build on.

Yeah, the auto-patching facility is very convenient. I'm sure some new items showed up in the game last time I updated, but maybe I just never noticed them previously.

    Yeah, auto-patcher works well - they're at patch 66.

And I suggest against downloading the CEP unless a module you want to play needs it. It's got some of the worst material and some of the best material mixed up in a package that's a total pain to use for a builder.

CEP is the TDD of NWN. Big, great idea, but works not-so-well.

Personally, I didn't enjoy Neverwinter Nights. The OC was pretty horrid, with only a few interesting parts that hardly made up for the poor plot and interface.

I bought SOU later on, and while a few of my complaints were fixed (more henchmen interaction, but not much!) it was still the same boring combat engine with the same flaws.

I've had a friend tell me to buy HOTU, as that is actually a good game, but I think I've spent enough money on NWN already.

I haven't bothered to play more than 10 minutes of Witch's Wake, which is the only module I've downloaded to date. However, some people seem to enjoy the game, so I'd say at least give it a try, but don't set your expectations too high.

The problem is that NWN has THE best character creation options of any CRPG, but the LEAST entertaining game play, unless some of the modules that Spellbound has reviewed are as good as she says they are.
