    Hello and good days,

Note: This is going to be a long post discussing character build up and it asks for help. If you are not interested do not waste time reading it.

I am new to neverwinter, and 3rd Edition rules. So character build up, feats, abilities, attack bonus, and number of attacks per round progresses are mixing my head up.

I have played BG series many times and after a point you cannot hold yourself back from power playing. This time I do not want to do it. NWN has many mods and comes with it many stories so I just want to role play this time.

But while role playing I do not want to kill the fun of the game. So I decided on a character build but I have no idea how to make the combinations that I wont make it an extremely stupid build. I will explain my thoughts below

    1. I want to play as a wizard. So the main aspect of the character will be spellcasting, but I do not want it to be sorcerer, I do not like choosing permanent spells besides I like learned abilities more than innate powers in role playing so it will be a wizard.

    2. Besides spell casting I want my character to hold some capabilities as a warrior. So when in desperate times, it would be able to pull out its sword and bash one or two heads.

    3. I have recognized that with weapon focus, and improved critical feats one can really boost up a characters weapon fighting with a chosen weapon.

    4. Then it comes out to be that if one chooses an elf he comes with a set weapon proficiencies which some of them can also be used with weapon finesse.

    5. So for example if one will be a rapier master (weapon focus, improved critical), using weapon finesse one can boost up his AC too.

    6. These kind of questions wiggle through my head , (if only tensers transformation was in nwn too there was nothing necessary to multiclass).

    6.i. Are rapiers abundant?
6.ii. Is multiclassing recuired for weapon focus and improved critical
6.iii. Should I multiclass to a rogue or fighter or should I add just one sorcerer level so that i can benefit from the fancy Red dragon disciple class?

I would really appreciate your help on this matter. I hope I was able to explain what troubles my mind and any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Rapiers aren't really that abundant as far as I remember. Btw, if you pick a sorcerer, you can re-organize all of your spells at every level-up, so you're never stuck with the spell selection you make initially.

    Is that a bug, or a D&D 3.5 thing?

the droprate of items are actually fixed to your weapon specialization, so if you focus on rapiers, you will find a fair few +1,2,3,4 (whatever the limit is in the oc).

that said. you could go fighter (1-2)/ wizard (x).

or go an even rogue/wizard and maybe throw in assasin later. then take the duel wielding feats and use a shortsword or dagger in your offhand.

alternative you could focus on short or longbows and build an arcane archer.

Death Rabbit, what, the spell-switching? It's a game feature only to make a sorcerer less restrictive to play.

    Oh, and NWN is 3e.

Yeah - the spell switching. Never tried a sorcerer in NWN, so I never realized. Now that I know that, I may give it a shot. Kinda lame, though.

About 3e - huh, I always thought that they updated the rules to 3.5 with Shadows of Underpants. That surprises me.

    Thanks

If you want a Rapier, you want to have at least 15 Wizard levels and pick up Rapier of the High Road and Greater Magic Weapon.

Overall, you might go the Fighter2/Wizard18 route, which'd be the best wizard fighter build - it's not much of a fighter but it's a good wizard.

This is in non-epic play only.

I have recognized that you can make a decent fighter wizard character using fighter/wizard/palemaster.

Then I learned about biowares epic character builds and saw one with

    fighter(4)/wizard(6)/palemaster(30)

but then this goes into power playing again. Though I cannot find a reason why not

    fighter(4)/wizard(26)/palemaster(10)

which one is better in your opinion the palemaster choice gives you extra AC and Hit Points but with epic warding and epic mage armor you are almost in damageable and untouchable. So what good is hit points and it is more reasonable to know that you are a spellcaster and you are fragile (it more reasonable).

If wizard is chosen then you get more spell feats (4) more and your spells DC and SR blows up.

By the way WHY PALE MASTER I hate it in the roleplaying sense you know a thick boned undead summoning undead character who can cast spells to become a red dragon(shapeshift spell lv9)???. WHY NOT A LICH prestige class?

Do you know any custom made LICH prestige class?

    Any suggestions?

guguma , get the prc 3.1 . it adds about 50 classes (base and prestige)
it has both the lich and the baelnorn(sp?) prestige classes

(edit) went back and looked again. it has over 130+ classes including about a dozen psionic classes

I have acquired the prc and I quite liked it, it has many aditional feats and classes that make you try to role play not power play.

It even has a drunken master with a bottle proficiency :D .

actually the lich prestige class is a little bit too powerful (imune to level9 and below spells!!!) great damage reduction and many more, anyway I will give it a try.

by the way can you play with prc characters on many mods? and online?.

Actually, the spell switching is not purely imagined for NWN. There is the possibility of spell switching for sorcerers, at least there is in 3.5. I don't know exactly about 3.0. But it is far more restrictive. You can only switch one spell per level up, and even then only of levels more than 3 under your maximum spell level and I think you can't even do it each level up. On the other hand, there is less need in the pnp rules for spell switching since you have many more metamagic feats to apply to your spells and you can even apply multiple ones on the same casting of a spell.

I don't know how much you've played into the OC yet, but it seems to me that the game interface (unlike BG, IWD, etc...) is geared more for front-line characters. This tends to lend itself to more power-building and less roleplaying (in combat anyway)... For instance, I don't know how you can do an archer when you only get a few shots before your enemies are within Attack-of-Opportunity range... The run-and-gun strategy might work, but it would get old pretty quick. Same with wizards --there have been plenty of gripes mostly from BG fans over this game, and I tend to think that they mostly apply to the problem of playing only one PC. The henchmen seem hard enough to keep alive without letting them fight on the front-line. But it pretty much is solo-adventuring, so it's a different feel. I mean think about it, playing a solo wizard is completely different than playing a wizard in a party. Front-line fighting for any solo PC is just not very avoidable. I haven't even tried a wizard or an archer yet, but I suppose that will be my next challenge, if I ever get around to it.

All that to say that if you do the fighter/wizard build, you may want to consider a few of the power-gaming options/ideas to make your front-line fighting go smoother...

I'm not sure how accurate my arguement is but... I played about 3/4 of the way through the OC with a sorceress character. I think she was like a sorc(10)\RDD(5) when I got bored. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a simple act of getting her that high (if you want to consider that high) but I thin she was definately fun to play.

Also I didn't have any trouble using Linu as a frontliner. She worked out great actually. Again, it has been a while so maybe my memory is distorted.
