I finally (after five months have started NW Gold. I'm in the OC and I'm baffled by some henchman issues.

    1. I'm using the bard and I'm guessing I have to increase the distance between us as she keeps ending up in melee and I'd rather her use her bow as I'm the tank. Is that the way to fix this?

    2. When she foolishly wanders into melee she then asks for healing. I figured out I can use the healing kit on her. Is there any way to give out potions?

    3. Speaking of inventory, can I give her stuff or does her stuff upgrade as she levels?

    4. Should I be upset when she dies, or just use the stone and get her back? Does I lose xp or anything when she dies?

    5. Should I get attached to her or are you supposed to keep changing henchmen as the game progresses?

    1) Have you talked to her and asked her to change her tactics? (Might be wrong game :|)

    2) Not sure :|

    3) It fixes itself ;)

    4) You don't lose exp but she does

    5) I personally prefer to have one henchman all the way through and unravel their sub-stories :)

    1) Xzarr's right. Tell her that you want her to use only missile weapons from now on.

    2) Just open your inventory screen, click on one of your potions and drag it over to either her portrait or her avatar (ie. *her*). Works with healing potions, as well as all other kinds of potions. Problem is, doing this takes maybe a round, and your character generally runs up to her side; provoking plenty of attacks of opportunity.

    3) Her own equipment upgrades on its own. Either every chapter or every level up (not sure which).

    4) Like Xzarr said (I think); though using the Stone costs gold.

    5) It's up to you. You can wipe the slate clean and start anew with a different henchman every chapter with no concern at all. Although I find it a little more fun to stick with one henchman; it's more realistic, as well as the fact that this way you get to know your henchman really well, rather than knowing tidbits about all of the henchmen.

Not to mention that you can keep getting the henchmen-supplied special item upgraded by speaking to them about every level or so. It's easier to do if you keep using the same henchman.

If you use every henchman, and complete all of their quests, you can get some pretty decent items...especially if you're a tank, the item from Daelan might be particularly useful...Sharwyn's less so.

I've found that early on, the best henchman for a tank would probably be Tomi...saves you from traps and opens chests...but once you get a little stronger and are able to survive traps and bash open chests, I had the best luck with Linu...she can heal, has decent magic (particularly against undead ;) ), and can fight reasonably well in a pinch.

As far as henchmen leveling up...I think they automatically level up at the start of each chapter, and if they are in your hire when you level up...they do also. If you are mid-chapter and are hiring a henchman for the first time, and you yourself have leveled up since the start of the chapter, you should have a dialog option asking them to level up.

As Hacken Slash said, the henchmen don't have any XP of their own, they rely on yours when leveling up. That means that even if your henchman killed the big boss, you get the XP. Your henchman always stays one level behind you.

In chapter one (and two I think), henchmen tell the tale depending on you levels (they tell one part for every level above third in chapter one), so you can do all the henchmen's quests and hear their stories.

    Have fun! ;)
