Unfortunately for the moment TeamBG is down so some of their tools are not really available unless you can get them from someone else.

There are some other tools that you might useful such as: WeiDU, DLTCEP, Infinity Explorer and IESDP

I recommend making an own item first. That's a good start, if you really think all this seriously.

As a start, learn what properties an item (spell, creature) has.
In order to do that, first open such files in the proper tools:

To easily make an own item, this tool helps you a lot, with its user-friendly interface and helpful Wizard option: Cromwell's Smithy
There is an excellent TUTORIAL included for Smithy, in its package. An excellent start!

To make a spell, use Spell Workshop

For starters, it is not recommended, but to see a creature's properties, you can use:
    DLTCEP

One important note: as we know, spells and items, and creatures too, have NAMES. These names aren't stored in the spell (item, creature) files themselves but in a file called dialog.tlk (in your game folder). Each text in dialog.tlk has a number, a so-called string reference(strref). The spell, item and creature files REFER to the dialog.tlk text with its strref, with a number.
Nevermind if you don't understand this, with time, if you are hard-working enough, you will learn it.

When you think you have finished the item (yes, start with items or creatures first), you need to make an installer for it.
Here comes WeiDU. Since you cannot include a copy of the huge dialog.tlk when distributing your mod, you have to store the texts you want somehow (as we know, see above, the texts aren't stored in the spell/item/creature files themselves)
WeiDU packages are the best way to distribute your mods. Check out other mods, check Weidu's readme, read tutorials. Then try to make your own WeiDU package based on the existing ones.

All these information may be too much first, and IE modding isn't easy at all! Hard work, but when you are better in it, it's quite fun!

Errm, IEEP, that can make and edit items for BG1.

Also, if you are going to create new custom monsters, you really should know that creating your own BAMs is not possible. Or rather, it's possible, but you'll have to replace already existing ones in order to put them in the game.

BG1 and BG2 use the exact same item file format, so anything that can edit one can edit the other. That being said, there are differences between how the two games handle items (weapon proficiencies for example).

The two most popular and powerful editors available are DLTCEP and Near Infinity. I would advise against IEEP and can offer no opinion on Cromwell's Smithy as I have not used it.

Yes I should have told what CamDawg did: it can handle both.
DLTCEP and NI are not for beginners, but later they will function well.
Smithy has a Wizard (it helps you make your item from step to step) , no other editor has such option.

I use IEEP with no problems, but most people use one of the others. ;)
