Hi guys, I just need 1 favor, can you guys tell me how to run NWN through DOS? I realy would appreciate it. It should allow the game to run faster that way.

Thanks guys, I have never learned DOS or even bother useing it in my short life. I know how to use DOS a little, I just need to know what to type in to run it.(Game is in default installation folder)

    Thx a lot!

umm...what makes you think it CAN run through dos? If I'm wrong, someone please tell me, but I do believe the minimum OS is Win98

Simple dos commands to be used are
    CD = Change directory
and the name of the .exe .bat, or .com file that is associated with a program (executable, batch, or command)

SO.....if you restart your comp in DOS mode, you'll most likely be at the c:bad: prompt.....type in cd neverwinternights (I believe that that is the default directory, make sure it's cd(space)neverwinternights) once there you'll see this--> C:bad:neverwinternights\
Than type cd(space)nwn The installer makes an NWN subdirectory within neverwinternights directory....now you'll see
    c:bad:neverwinternights\nwn\

Now just type the application file name....for example, the NWN directory contains a couple executable files NWCONFIG, NWN, NWMAIN and NWLOADER to name a coulpe (ones that are important to you....others include NWSERVER, NWTOOLSET (if you explore the folder containing these files in windows it will say that it is an application file.)

OK, now, to get the game running, the problem you'll have (and admittedly, I don't know which file you need to run) is that you'll need to skip the NWN application popup that automatically runs when you double click the shortcut from the desktop. I would ASSUME that this is the NWMAIN file. SO, logically, you might want to try NWN first. if that fails, then try NWloader next. NWtoolset is pretty self explanatory, as is NWserver.

Amyway, that is my little lesson in DOS. If you forget any of these things while your in dos, get to the directory as explained above, and type DIR(space)*.exe This will give you a list of all of the files with an .exe extension. similarly you can also do it with .com, and .bat, but I don't think there are any in the directory.

As for the response about win98 being the lowest required OS, technically when you restart the comp in DOS "mode" you're still running win98 in the background. Even when win3.1 was out, by exiting to dos, you were just running a platform in windows. Your operating system is always whatever version of windows your running. In order to have a standard DOS, you can't have windows of ANY version.

When I first started mucking around with computers (15 years ago, I'm 26 now) I learned on DOS. The closest I came to a windos based interface was a program called menuworks. All that was was a DOS program that helped organize your other DOS programs, not an OS in the least. Windows is a full blown OS, you'll NEVER use DOS on you current system. I loved the simper days of DOS.....well, simpler for me anyway.

    Thanks, hope this helps.

BTW, it STILL may not work, simply due to the fact that you MAY need the interface with Windows to get it running.

After typing this (and fixing typos) I tried to restart my comp in DOS mode to see what I could do......well, WIN2000 doesn't let you. Anyway, after checking the shortcut on the desktop, I notice that it points to the NWN.exe file, so this IS NOT the file you'd want to run, try NWNmain, that MIGHT bring up the NWN main menu (the one that shows after all the logos and the movie........HOPEFULLY, if not, just keep trying different .exe files until you find the right one.

[IMG] I'm really, really curious where you saw that NWN would run in DOS. Because it won't.

    *ADDED LATER IN DAY*
Sorry for the breif post earlier. I want to thank you for the DOS tutorial. I might need it later. I realy appreciate all that writing you did for me. And to anser the one guys question. One of the help sites that you see in config to anser questions said that. I forget the name and dont realy have the time to look. But that is what they told me and Im sorry if I misled people with its info.

But again thank you very much. If you need anything just tell me.

Tommarow im getting my RAM upgraded to at least 275 so that will fix the lag problem. Also I will be getting cable internet tommarow. Yay Im so excited! My mom finally understands why the comp needs an upgrade.

Oh well thanks man I appreciate it!

  7. NWN needs DirectX and there's no DirectX in DOS. I think you might have heard about it would work in Linux, a UNIX OS. Linux doesn't require as many system resources as Windows does so it will most likely run better.
