If you see Lord of the Rings trailers, ads, posters etc. do you notice that Frodo either looks like this :aaa:

    or this :whoa:

Is it just me going senile or Elijah Wood?

[IMG] You are absolutely right about Frodo. Probably the actor will get an oscar for his exceptional screenplay. He has actually patented these expression as scared-as-shit (tm) and wimp (tm).
One of the countless reasons why LOTR part one sucked period

I agree, LOTR movie part one sucked period.

And you're not right, although Frodo definetly looks as #1 whimperer, at least he shows some emotions unlike majority of other characterless Arcanum-looks plagiarizing robots.

LOTR movie part one sucked exclamation mark.

You people just wait for LOTR part 2 and 3, when it gets real bad for Frodo. I shudder to think of his facial expression when he sees Mordor... not to mention Shelob and all those mean orcs.

[IMG] He has saved a yet secret third expression for Mordor. Only thing yet known is the name: wetpants (tm)

    [IMG] hih
    Well, of course...
when I saw the movie I thought that Elijah was very cute, I still do. But later on I realized he made Frodo look like a wimp. Frodo is supposed to be a cool guy, not a guy that cries when he is close to get pierced by a spear. *sigh*
He could have played the role as Frodo better, braver
But he is still very cute...
    ;)

I have to agree that his acting was less than exceptional on all counts, however it was forgotten with the rest being brilliant and the film itself being good.

(Ragusa and Extremist, i understand you didn't like the film but what the hell does suck period mean? Is this some lamo American term or something or is it really as disgusting as it sounds?)

Bah! Frodo was a wimp and afraid, and he even failed at the end. He was not a trained warrior, he was a fat little hobbit who liked to eat (like the rest of the hobbits do). He was brave and heroic because despite his fears he did what needed to be done (on several occasions).

"LOTR movie part one sucked period."

Well, I thought it was good. So I guess that makes me the resident freak of this thread.

Anyways, in book one, Frodo *was* a wimp. Book 3, however, he's learned a few things.

Or just hasn't eaten in a few days, which brings out the tiger in anyone...

Oh, for shame! You will probably tell me that the animated movie was better?

I loved, adored, the LOTR movie -- I don't buy DVDs (because how many movies does a person want to see again, let alone more than twice?) but I will buy this one.

That said -- Frodo is supposed to be a wimp! An ordinary guy who gets jolted out of his complacency and thrust into the middle of world events. In "The Two Towers", I think it is, Sam is talking about hearing all these tales of adventure and now being in one -- right? It is Frodo's everyman quality that makes the drama believable -- and Elijah Wood, apart from being cute, is a good everyman. Frodo *isn't* a hero, and that's the whole point.

The Tolkein translation of "The Green Knight" that you buy here on SP differs from the one I have (I forget the translator) -- in that, too: Gawain seems more a hapless victim of circumstance in Tolkein's version. Maybe larger than life and infallible only works for NPCs, like the elves -- not protagonists.

[IMG] While bad acting is (undisputed) better than terribly animating a movie it is ... still not really a distinction ... and at least for me it's no reason to enjoy a bad acted movie - only because it's better than terrible :o

Bad acting? Please, get serious and do not make such sweeping generalisations that include amazing performances - especially by Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Sean Astin, Ian Holm and Viggo Mortensen. The only way you could justify your frankly bizarre claim of bad acting is that some of the characters do not perfectly fit the menatal image you had of them. The only bit of acting I found odd is Hugo Weaving who seems to be practicing for Matrix: Reloaded. Elrond Smith?

    LOL @ The God!!!!!

    *sigh*

    The Movie /= The Book
    The Book /= The Movie

Never will (at least, in our lifetimes; wait until optical computers have been around for a while and we'll see). Never has. Not even the cartoon one.

I've heard that when you learn/know multiple languages, there is a point of fluency where you stop converting between the two. Where a word spoken in German does not have to be converted to Czech before comprehension occurs.

It's time to stop converting between the movie and the book...

Frodo is a freak. He wouldn't have got anywhere in the film if it wasn't for Gandalf and Bilbo.

The movie was good, Wood was horrible.

He's set the new standard for overacting. It's not that he can't handle situations, because the original Frodo (of the books)is pretty weak too, it's just that weird look in his eyes and that exaggerated tone.

Well, the acting (I thought) was fine. Sure it could have been better, but what do you want? Frodo is a whimp, as stated above, and Wood acted like a whimp. Besides, Sam is the real hero ;)
