[IMG] I'm seing FOTR in about seven hours. There's a 12:15 AM showing tonight (really tomorrow morning) and I bought the tickets in advance like it sounds like a lot of you did. When I get back, I'll post a general finding with no spoilers, and maybe we can post generally on the issue thenceforth. I've got the glowing Burger King mugs, but as much as I would like to, I won't be dressing up or anything.

Think we all would like to post our opinions here anyway. I'm not going to see it before friday, so I might not even check the Whatnots if there is something revealing the features in the film here ;).

[IMG] I just read a review in the local newspaper(DT-BB for all you norwegians) and it got slaughtered by this woman who couldn't stop complaining that it was to violent:rolleyes:Besides that she had no idea what so ever on how to write a review, she just started at the beginning of the movie and pretty much told us what happened all the way only interupted by complaining about violence and the stupid hobbits who had two breakfasts.

People like this should be tied up in the town square so that people could spit on them.

[IMG] I saw the show this morning at 12 midnight, about 9 hour ago. Wow! I know you will all love it. It is all you expect and more. They did a excellent job with plot, characterization, and imagary. Clearly the best movie of the year but I won't wreck things for you. Just trust me it won't let you down. Enjoy!

[IMG] Saw it last night and it ROCKS!
    Errans rating: :):):):):)
For me, the best bit are the settings, Hobiton, Rivendel, Isengard are just right, like he plucked them out of my imagination. Ian MacKellan as Gandalf with the voice of Tolkein steals the acting plaudits. Orcs are ugly and scary, battles are fast, furious and bloody. If you don't think a bow is a melee weapon wait til you see Legolas in action; and yes, Gimli has a scottish accent!
Downsides, chunks left out- Old Man Willow, Barrow Wights, Tom Bombadil. Let's face it, if they'd put EVERYTHING in it would be a 10 hr movie. Messing with the plot to suit a mass audience? Guilty, but the love interest is not overdone and things like the horse chase help to maintain the tension.
Lots will find that their favourite character or line of dialogue has been missed out. Remember, they weren't making this for a handful of Tolkein buffs. Films that do play to buffs bomb at the box office (Dune, Cartoon LotR). IMHO the film is true to the spirit of the book, and I for one can't wait for Xmas 2002!

[IMG] The whole package is awesome. They have really tranfered the feel from the books unto the screen. The things that they have changed is not something you notice, they said that Arwen had gotten a bigger role in the film and that may be so but it is still only less than 5 minutes you have to see her and it did not disturb me.
LotR movie shows that it is possibly to make a good fantasy movie and keep the spirit from the books, now i hope they will start making more fantasy movies and make them good.

[IMG] I didn't post after I saw the film because I have a sprained knee and its killing me. So anyway, I saw it and everything said above is true. I thought costumne, casting and cinematography was great. Unfortunately its not on the news much lately, all they can talk about is "Kate & Leopold" blah blah...I hope the movie does well this weekend, I may see it again.

[IMG] I guess he just picked a new staff up from the forest floor, looked like a knobbly piece of wood to me, didn't have '+3 vs orcs' stamped on it anywhere. ;)

Erran: You couldn't have put it more perfectly than you did. (BTW: The bow comment with Legolas.... undoubtedly some of the most riveting combat there is in the movie) I'm extremely pleased that they didn't make the romance in the movie as overwhelming as expected. Whether or not it becomes more predominant in the next movies remains to be seen, but for this one... it wasn't as bad as I thought. What I was relieved to see was the way they filmed the hobbits in comparison with the elves, humans, etc. I wasn't sure how they were going to make them look as small as they were meant to look. (I just know Elijah Wood isn't THAT short :p) The soundtrack could've been a bit more explosive.. but it wasn't bad. Otherwise, the movie itself was phenomenal. I couldn't be more pleased with Peter Jackson's directing ability. Truly, it was a remarkable film.

[IMG] I saw LOTR yesterday...The pluses: Scenery and costumes are fantastic! The creatures are incredible! I also liked how they give a little more insight into Saruman's treachery, and how he created the Uruk Hai.

I have to say that I really missed the flavor of tradition and history that Tolkien brought to his books, and how the past had power over the present. Meaning specifically, the attack at Weathertop, where Frodo helps to repel the attack by invoking Elbereth.

I thought a lot of the neat little things were missing, the hobbits daggers (which at least Merry's would have played a role later), and Galadriel's gifts, and the re-forging of Aragorn's sword.

I liked the movie a lot, but the things that were missing, I think only hardcore fans of the trilogy like me will miss. Otherwise, it's a great flick, with top notch effects!

[IMG] How did they make the hobbits so small? By building 2 sets in many cases, one human scale, 1 hobbit scale. There were even 2 different scale versions of Gandalf's cart!

[IMG] Best movie I have seen and it will probably ruin all other movies to come until the next comes out in a year.

It is true that there was alot of things missing from the movie, but I think alot of them were actually filmed and then cut away in the final version. I mean like the fact that when they came out of lothlorien they all had the same capes and (don't know the english word)buckles?? on their capes. Atleast it shows a deep caring for the details.

I seriously got chills when Arwen and Frodo was standing in the river and Arwen said "If ye want him, come and claim him". And that was not even the only point in the movie that made me feel like that.

They have actually managed to capture the feeling you get from reading the book, I have never experienced that with a movie before.

But maybe I should stop the rambling(just saw the movie and need to get some of this out)

I am definitively going to see this again as soon as possible. Hope they set it up again just before the next one is released, or just show them together.

    :D:D:D:D:D:

    well

i have to say LotR was the best damn movie i have *ever* seen in my entire existance.

I was over-awed by everything. Inlcuding the visuals the sounds... everything. It just drew me a little closer to the book i have come to love over the last 2 years. Damn it's friggin' amazing...

    and the balrog...

my oh my... okay they missed a few bits out like Tom Bombadil... but they can be forgiven. I think they did marvellously... and what a 3 hour epic...

i was annoyed when i heard a guy at the end slagging it off coz he thought "it was all 3 books in one movie".

I almost wanted to smack him round the face real hard!

[IMG] The thing is a lot of those 'little things missing' you talk about they had pics from on the website. For example they had footage of the gifts being given to the followship. I guess they had to cut stuff out to took the movie to a reasonable length. I mean if the film was much longer you'd have to have an intermission like Gone with the Wind.

I hope when the DVD comes out that they have a directors cut that includes many of those cut sceenes.
