[IMG] I think it only depends on the story you want to write. If your main character is a conan like barbarian than a male fits better (i hate red sonja) but on the other hand if you want an inteligent, smart character....

    hi there

I think a story needs both strong male and female characters. As for the main character, that would be more of a personal choice, yes? ( and depending on the type of story/character , as Bogi said )

Personally, I believe the important thing is to have a main character that you the writer can easily relate to... (in order to make a believable character)
(I have a thing for female sorcs & thieves & stuff, though - they need to be heavily represented in any fantasy story :p )

I've got the feeling that in most decent stories, the main character sort of create themselves?

Ie, I think the character will grow from your story, not the other way around. So start on an outline, and see who appears.

Man, I haven't read a good book with a female character in a long time. It seems as though a female character can take so many different paths.

    a. the typical bad ass 'Dark Angel' type that's represented a lot in movies, television shows, and comics

    b. the oh I'm a prissy girl snooty lil princess, which nobody likes.. until the end where she shows some compassion for mankind

    c. my personal favorite, the girl is a real nobody who wants to be popular and loved. as the story progresses, she completes a certain quest, saving someone of kingship or even a mere heirloom, and she becomes recognized.. more so promoted into an unlikely high position way out of her class. towards the end, she realizes that she hates what she has become and wishes she had never left the 'simple' life

I don't know just go with whatever is flowin through your head man. I'm not saying a male main character would be a bad choice. Just as a reader, I like to see something that's never been done before. I don't really see much of (c) being done before. Adding on romance can throw a whole new twist on the story.. but depending on the reader, most probably don't want to be reading something like the cartoon Aladin.

Well, good luck. Keep us updated on your progress.

Hey Vandalore- You want to read a book with a different spin on female leads? Try Thendara House by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It was the first of hers I read, years ago, and it hooked me. Talk about a clash of cultures...

Go for a bloke, just try and name a punk band with female members (apart from the Dance Hall Crashers)

(Off the record, "Melt Banana" is a Japanese punk band with 2 women & 2 men ;) )

What's your favorite type of ending to a story, BTW? A happy one, or a tragic one? Or something inbetween?

    Personally, I'm a sucker for Torment-like endings...

You could also try The Mists of Avalon, though I think it was a little long-winded.

I'm pretty sure that this was also written by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Thanks Darien, Grey. I'll have to check it out when I'm done with Book I of the Dragon Lance Chronicles.

You'd think I'd have more time to read since I chose not to have internet connection any more. I'm not really missing it either. I don't know if anyone even cares anyways. It's been over months since I've chatted with well anyone. I still do emails at school, but that's about it. I prefer to use the phone, although calls never go through any more because my roommates are always online.

If anyone cares, I updated my site day the other day. I'll try to keep it somewhat up to date, if you're ever curious what I'm up to, your best bet is to check there. If your into emails, you can sign my gbook, add your email there, and I'll drop you a line sometime.

Well see you in the next blue moon.
    Peace,

    -BHuntR

[IMG] Blue Moons are few and far between. We will miss you...

*wonders what it's like to actually use the phone to TALK to people*

I'm writing a book and I know how difficult it can be to get started, I knew where it was going and what would happen in the mean time, but how to begin? got there in the end...I have to admit that my main character is male, but in this case the story called for it, but I find that the lead female is a much stronger person, she didn't start off that way, just kind of progressed to it. I write my feelings into my characters, they seem more real that way...my only advice is not to think too hard about it, let it flow and don't give up if you hit an uncreative patch...good luck! ;)
