[IMG] In Austia only the bigger towns have professional fire fighters. The rest of the country is covered by volunteers. I am one of them. Almost every village has it's own brigade. I think in other countries it's similar. Are there any fire fighters among you?

Are there any big towns in Austria then??

No, just kiddin' here in the beautiful Holland there are both proffesional and volunteer fire fighter in the big and small cities. The was a big fire here yesterday in some sort of oil and gas storage place and I heared from a volunteer fire fighter that there were a lot of them present.

Isn't that very dangerous being a fire fighter, because you risk your life and you don't even get payed for that??

I was a fire-fighter for the state of california and then for the U.S. forest service.

When I started, with the state, I earned minimum wage minus 250 a month for room and board, took home 350$ a month...a volunteer with cigarette money :)

Working for the forest service wasn't bad, I could earn 20,000 bucks in 5 months and still have time for school.

Generally, in america only very small towns are served only by volunteer fire fighters, alot of mid-sized towns have a few professionals and volunteer brigades for back up.

    So, I'm a trucker now, but untill a year ago I was a fire-fighter

To relativize my quote with the 'bigger towns' it is about 50.000+ where profs are established. In the village where i live (about 1500 inhab.) we have around 40 missions a year. Mostly technical ones what means either cut half-dead young men out of their fast cars or pump out basements after thunderstorms.
The real fire fighting missions are around 3 to 5 a year and a real big fire we fortunately did not have for 6 years.
Combined mission and training we spent more than 2500 man-houres for public in 2000 - only to see how money saving the volunteers are for goverment.
