[IMG] Since my early childhood I never was afraid of visiting the dentist - the first dentist I went to, Dr. Ruland, was an one of the old pre-WW-II school: "Well, do you want an injection or are you man enough not to need one?" Of course the answer was "No injection." and pleased he answered "Great*, now when it hurts, just pinch your leg!" ... amazingly it worked. Not even my wisdom teeth really impressed me, wisely I made an exception from the rule and chose an injection then.

One day my old dentist retired and I chose a new one, and kept on the old habit of getting no injection. Coldblooded and calm I went to the dentist to get my regular checks and when he had to repair something I just pinched my leg and everything was fine. Until the day my dentist found one of my teeth in bad need of repair. It started like usual - he was drilling while I pinched my leg, bored.

Eventually he made a break because he was needed elsewhere for a couple of minutes and I probed my bad tooth with my tongue, finding the hole kinda large. In the meanwhile, the two girls aiding him, worst of all friends, came along and had a look or two, commented "Wow, that's a big one!" and we chatted a little.
My dentist then returned, saying "Now let's go back to work!" he took his driller, started again - and hit my nerve.
To make it short, it resulted in me having 8 silly and painful weeks after that ... and I lost my trust in dentists and for the next three years I always found convincing reasons not to go there and when I lacked reasons I always had something more important to do.

Now, bowing to the mockery of my g/f, I eventually decided to dare it and I went to the dentist again. I was right in time. Asked what kept me from coming the last three years, I quickly smothered further unwanted commentaries referring to my root treatment.
It happened that I had to wait a little, but I wasn't even able to really enjoy an article about Norman Birnbaum - I was restless. When I eventually took my place in THE CHAIR I noticed I was sweating, feeling tense and uneasy while reflecting about the silly impression the discretely barred window made on me (he's in 1st floor, practically an invitation for burglars).

Dr. Köhler appeared, and quickly went to work, 1-1 OB**, 1-2 OB ... 1-8 missing ... 2-1 OB and so on until and 2-8 missing ... And now the lower jaw ... "Gravity!" it hit me, perhaps they are more subject to ... 3-1, 3-2, 3-3 OB ... until 4-8 missing. Sigh of relief. "Nothing found! Now then it makes really fun to go to the dentist, doesn't it?" Dr. Köhler beamed ... while the thought crossed my mind that he might have lied about my teeth to get some real work on me - the next time ... I also dismissed the thought that he, noting my tension, may have lied in order to comfort me as irrational and eventually started to relax, my heart feeling light.
"Do you want to make an appointment for next time?" Hell, do I look that way? "No, I'm calling you up if I feel like dentist again." I replied with a smile and said goodbye happily ... :spin: ... and I decide when I added silently ... :1eye:

    * It only appeared later to me that the secondary advantage of getting no injection was that he could go to work without waiting for the novocaine to take effect - more patients per hour ...
    ** OB = Ohne Befund, practically o.k. ;)

So what about you and your dentist? Do you love, hate, distrust, fear him or her?

My dentist is a kind man. He has been my dentist for twelve or fifteen years (I don't know exactly), and I don't mind going to the dentist, probably because there is never anything wrong with my teeth.

I don't mind visiting the dentist, of course I have not yet had the misfortune of having a cavity and so the worst part of the experience is usually being scolded for not flossing as often as I should.

I work full time in the city and go to the dentist near my home in the burbs and as a result I can only go in Saturday mornings. As a result, I frequently end up seeing a different dentist but the dentist does so little that it really does not matter. I have had one hygienist that I didn't care for as she was a little heavy handed with the hooked scraping thingee but that is nothing compred to what Ragusa went through.

I did have my wisdom teeth removed but I was drugged into unconsciousness and I got off fairly lightly in the post-op bruising and pain department.

    I HATE Dentists

Below is an example of me having a dentist appointment:

Me: Hello, this is gonna hurt a lot right?

Dentist: You're perceptive for a young man, hand over your tooth and noone will be hurt. If you resist it shall be a waste of your life.

Me: You are a fool if you believe I would trust your benevolence, step aside and you and your assistants will be unhurt.

Dentist: I'm sorry that you feel that way, young man. *turns on "Drill of Chaos+2"

    Me: Eeeeeeek!!! *faints*

    Some hours later....

Dentist: Ahhh the Child of Bob has awoken.
It is time for more Drilling. *drills*

    Me: Nooo!

The pain will only be passing, you should survive the process.*drills*

    Me:Eeeek!

    Dentist:Interesting.You have much untapped power...*drills*

    Me:argh!

Dentist: Do you even realise your potential?*drills*

Assistant: More intruders have entered the clinic.

Dentist: They act sooner than we anticipated. No matter, they will only prove a slight delay *walks away*

Me: *bolts through the window* I'm outta here!!

    T'is true I tell you!

I've never minded going to the dentist, even though I've lived through the following:
~8 cavities, all in the molars
    3 yrs of orthodontia
    1 root canal
    6 months of periodental treatment
    2 crowns

I've never had an anesthetic stronger than novocaine for any treatment, and I've even been able to fall asleep in the chair.

[IMG] I hate dentists. I have phobia of surgical equipment, and they display it all! They constantly lie and it always hurts. They poke and jab and make stupid jokes to panic you. like "oops I slipped, we'll have to remove that." They KNOW I hate things like that and they KNOW I'm paranoid, they've been told. They've been complained to by countless parents.

And I also know - the electric chair was invented by a dentist and so was putting sugar into chewing gum.

Mmpffhihi.. Child of Bob?! Be proud, Jesper898 you've made a less-than-sane idiot giggle.

As to the topic, I don't mind dentists, but I have a feeling dentists hate me for having a breath rancid enough to make anybody faint.

I miss my old dentists. :( Some of them were really good, always asking if it hurt, if I needed more painkiller.... the one I visited for a root canal was a brute. It hurt, and she did not care.

I admit that one of the very, very few places on earth where I am trembling and dense is the dentist's chair....

I am actually having my wisdom teeth now. I am praying that thjey won't trouble me enough to warrant a removal...

I should still remove my wisdom teeths, meaning that I should have "four gaping, bleeding holes" in my mouth for a few weeks. :mommy: My old dentist used to be type: "Are you scared? No? Are you sure? Absolutely SURE? Ok then... if you are absolutely sure. Let's start, nervous? " So I can't say I like of the visits.

Dunno yet if it will be the same at my new dentist (I have moved) -I make a visit once per every 5 years.

I've had my time with dentists. I only ever took an injection when they refused to continue unless I would. That is before I grew bigger and people amazingly stopped refusing so much ;)

Chevvy is a man. No injection for a man. By the process of sylogism, no injection for chevvy. Except my very much screwed up wisdom tooth. I took two injections and put earphones in my ears, Scottish bagpipe marches playing as they were chopping the crown off and sticking the root on some drill to pull it out encircled by an impressive layer of meat. I went to the bus, came home and joined #sorcerers. After some two hours injection totally stopped working and I made the only wise decision: sleep. I woke up in the evening and went to a dancing.

The second wisdom tooth was on Wednesday. It came out in one piece and no antibiotics were needed afterwards. I still have plastic threads in my mouth and shouldn't speak too much in my own best interest, but who really cares.

Standard, less spectacular stomatological encounters look more or less like this:

Chevvy comes in. Chevvy notices that cute creature fresh after med school wrapped in white. Here comes Chevalier's Reluctant Smile of Doom followed by an old-school 'good morning'. After a charming little chatter, a mellifluous caring voice enriched by a slight sensual note asks:

'Anaesthetic?' And the brow goes up a bit.

    'Thank you.'

'Are you sure?' (mind the scale)

    'Yes, thank you.'

'Are you really sure? It may hurt.' (compassionate, caring, somehow saddened)

    'Yes, thank you.'

'You will not reconsider?' (somewhat concerned)

    'No, thank you.'

After a longer period of drilling:

    'Do you feel anything?'

    'Pardon?'

    'I mean, in the teeth.'

    'Well, yes.'

And so on and so forth until:

    'That's all.' (smile)

'Thank you.' (Chevalier's Reluctant Smile of Doom, Issue 2)

'Goodbye' (followed by Chevalier's Reluctant Smile of Doom, Issue 3)

'Goodbye' (quite a wide smile, one would say)

[IMG] I always bring a fireball scroll to a dentist. So if I take too much damage, I blow my way out! I just hate the film thingys, actually. I makes me choke.

My mum's a dentist so I've never had any real fear about dentists. Dental nurses though, they are a different story... Primary school, about 5 years ago the local district dental nurse came to our school. She would go through every one at the school usually apart from me, my brother and sister, because she new my mum was a dentist. But this year was different. I got a note during class to ask me to go to the dental nurses clinic thing. I went in and sat down.
A few minutes later she had one of those things with a sharp hook on the end of it poking at my teeth. "Oh, I think theres a hole developing here."
She starts poking harder. "Ah yes, its getting really big now."
Poking really hard now "Ah look at it," she says with a surprise in her voice.
Still poking at my tooth, "Look it's getting bigger even as we speak."
I felt like biting her hand off. Stupid lady.

I'm fairly lucky. I haven'y had a fillng since I was 6, and they have all fallen out. I don't need braces, and can actually keep my wisdom teeth without the pushing the others out of place. I'm going to ditch them anyway, though. Whats the point of having private health insurance otherwise.

    19 years the same dentist.

19 years absolutely no problem with my teeth, not one drilling section, no crowns or root treatment nothing.

So you can say I don't fear my dentist.

Okay, let's see: Before 6 I had this dentist who was OK...but I still didn't like him, thanks to that shell of silvery-metal stuff he put over one of my teeth. Well, at least I got to show off about it (silver teeth!). The dentist I have now is pretty nice...and I have braces, so school dentists bugs me not. Not too bad if I think about it. Doesn't mean I'm not scared when going to them.

I do HATE go to the dentist
My dentist (who is a she and friend of the family and personall dentist for the whole 28 years of my life) is very gentle and very good at her work but i can't stand the injenction thing in generall, and especially in my mouth is intolerable.
So i avoid going to the dentist untill there is no other way to save me from the pain. And when i go there is no injection unless there is no other way to avoid passing out from the pain (root canal i have three of them). My wisdom teeth (funny here in Greece we call them fronimites which means pretty much the same) are a little out of the proper way but when she asked if i wanted them out i denied because i can't stand the injection, instead she filled the cavity holes (no injection :D )

I'm extremely afraid of the dentist, the only reason being though is that all the dentists that I've had were DT's(navy dentists) these people know absolutely nothing about teeth and seem to make it up as they go along. I've had about 8 fillings in the same tooth, they keep falling out.

Well, I have bad experience with female dentists. In the army I had to consult one who wasn't only ugly but had a breath ... well, I'll spare you the details, except this: Before that I always thought that if anyone knew about mouth hygiene then a dentist.

And as my dentists generally have been male the situation wasn't ... err ... particularly interesting for me, that much for the leaning over part. The girls working there were a different story though, not at all evil, but as they weren't the dentist this would lead us :yot: :)
